My overclocked Radeon 4850 512MB with AMD X2 250 Regor

I ended up having to sell my main rig for cash with my AMD 965 BE Quad core and 6870 and just happened to have almost enough parts to put together a new system, so i bought a refurbished X2 250 regor off newegg for $35 and got some basic 2x2 GB DDR3 and threw it together with an OEM acer board, and an old 4850. All inside my Antec 300 case on a Corsair HX-520. Here are my scores.

My video card is overclocked to 700 core 1100 memory from the stock 625/993 settings. I haven't pushed it further but i haven't seen any artifacts yet.

Final score - 11,082

Summarized specs-

AMD Athlon X2 Regor @ 3.0 ghz
ATI Radeon 4850 512 MB @ 700/1100
2x2 GB G.Skill @ 1066 CAS-7
ACER DA061L-3D mobo outa a aspire 1420
Corsair HX-520

As surprised as I am I take it

Scrap parts for a friends build
Phenom 9600 2.3ghz 4core
OEM Mobo
2GB DDR2-800
ATI 5830

Plays all the latest titles at 1080p on his 60" Plasma with acceptable FPS with some detail tweaking.
Admittedly weak on the cpu side but an Athlon x4 635 on a OCable board for ~3.7ghz is in the works with 4gb 1066 ram.

Still better than any xbox

The biggest thing i hate about this system is the motherboard has no room for expansion. It has no fan headers except the 4 pin cpu, has only 2 sata ports, only 1 pci-e 16x slot and 1 pci-e 1x slot, so not much room for a sound card. And obviously the lack of overclocking options, i bet this chip could clock well.

Did you ever benchmark that system of your friends?

I did a Vantage run which is hard on the cpu/memory bottlenecks and came out at ~8K total score. The cpu/ram was really holding things back.
Had a Athlon x4 at 3.5ghz w/1700mhz ram and oced 5850 couple years ago and got 15K.

You are likely close to balance between cpu/gpu for games now so I wouldn't worry about ocing the cpu. GPU will be more important first.

In around a month I'll have some cheap 5830/50's for sale so keep an eye out.

Awesome deal. I went the bargain route for my sig rig as well. $135 for a system that scores over 16,000. No complaints.... other than the racket those cards make.

Vmod/memVmod is too easy with the 4850s. Gave me another 150Mhz to work with. Topped out at 850/1200Mhz

I must have the worst thrift PC on the forums. Pentium D 820 overclocked to 3.1ghz GTX 470 undervolted but at stock speeds. 7009 is my best 3dmark06 score. ill have to download vantage.

Pentium D 820 from scrap dell gx745 (fsb set to 222) (free)
Asrock conroexfire e-sataII (free)
1gb ddr2 533 (free)
GTX 470 - traded a full tower im not using
Coolermaster 460w (free)
80gb 7200rpm IDE drive (painfully slow) free
generic beige atx case (free)
pci smc wireless card (free)

Counter strike global offensive plays decent on high settings, world of warcraft is a bit choppy unless i avoid all other players.

Just swapped in a pentium D 945 and my 3dmark score is up to 7796

buttons that is a great gpu, but the cpu is where the bottleneck is. I recommend you in another thread to upgrade that Pentium D to a Conroe and you would see your scores jump way up for $20-50 depending on which one you can afford.

What kind of OC you get with the 945? Some more Ram and a decent OC should help you out some, I used to get my 945 to 4.5Ghz with a bit of voltage with a P5K Premium and a P5N32-SLI Deluxe. It could be worse....you might not have any rig at the moment

One of these days if i see one on the for sale section i am going to get rid of this OEM board and get me a proper AM3 board if i can find one cheap so i can have room to put my sound card and IDE drive + another sata drive on it and maybe even overclock it a bunch if i can find the right board.

I think my heatsink or thermal paste job is holding me back, my 945 doesnt like overclocking at all. probably benchmark stable around 3.55ghz. i was running it at 3.5ghz fine. my asrock board doesnt have any voltage options and i didnt really want to solder any resistors to increase voltage. I might have this pc sold for $30 anyway...

I got the new mechwarrior online game last friday, so i brought home a dell XPS 730x (core i7 920) ,put the geforce 470 GTX into it and im playing my new game at max settings around 37-55fps depending on the scene/map, etc. (i still need more ram...)
