i7 3770k RealTemp Temperatures @ Idle

Hi,

I just built this system over the weekend and figure I would test the system at stock settings first before doing any overclocking.

My concern right now is that when I run RealTemp 3.70 my core temps are showing anywhere between 26C to 38C at idle. (fluctuates pretty rapidly), at full load (Prime95) it shoots up to mid 60s and peaks at around mid 70s.

Does the fluctuation at idle seem normal? I mean it would jump randomly and pretty rapidly at times...please let me know if anyone is experiencing the same thing. (i'm guessing i need to re-apply TIM and re-seat my HS and will do so when I have time this weekend)

Any help or insight would be appreciated!

Here is the spec of my build:

CPU: i7 3770k (running at stock)
HS: Hyper 212 Evo (2 x 120mm fans, Push/Pull config), Arctic Silver 5 TIM
MB: Asus P8Z77
RAM: Corsair 16GB Vengeance LP
GPU: 2 x EVGA GTX 670 FTW SLI
Case: Antec P280
PSU: Corsair HX850

If you are under about 80 you are ok under full load. But I would expect slightly lower temps than what you are getting....

Have you changed the voltage any? You may want to manually set the CPU voltage if it is on Auto.. even if you are not overclocking.

I did not change the CPU voltage at all, everything is stock.

Being a relatively new overclocker, what voltage do you think I should set my CPU to? Vcore is currently sitting at ~1.01V to ~1.02V idle and peaks at 1.144V with Prime95.

Thanks again!

I had the same problem with my new build on an core i5 3570k, temps would go up and down in seconds just like you described. I reapplied the tim and re-seated and am getting stable temps now, still higher than I like but I ordered a new cooler for that.

First... fluctuating temps is normal. How much it fluctuates depends on what the processor is doing.

Second... just because you aren't actively doing something on your PC doesn't mean it isn't working. Pull up the process monitor and see if it is doing anything when you see the temp spikes.

Third... You are well within the thermal limits of this processor which are much higher than previous processors. That being said it does seem a tad high but there are many factors for that and a good aftermarket cooler can help significantly.

I see 20-25 degress at idle on my system, and about 50 degrees when stressing the CPU (the lowest temps I have ever had). I run an H100 on my new system and it seems to work great.

Typically when I have heat issues my first step is to reseat the heatsink and see if that changes anything. If it is still getting too hot for you after that simply look into buying a new cooler, the Hyper212 is supposed to be very good and is pretty cheap, or you can look into something like the H80 or H100 for a little better cooling.

If this is a new install I would look to see if indexing is running your temps up. I just re-installed and mine is indexing like crazy.I haven't checked temps during this but like was said bring up the task manager to see.

I had time tonight to re-seat my EVO so figure I would give an update on this.

After re-applying the paste, the temperature on 4 cores are much stable now ranging from 28C to 33C across the board on idle (previously all 4 cores would constantly show different temps and jump all over the place). Running Prime95 full load now puts me at about mid 50C to low 60C, which is alot better than what I had. (figure these temps are not bad?)

Also, previously I had the cooler fans configured as pull from front and push outside back panel, I figure I would switch it up this time changing to pull from bottom and pushing out the top. (don't know if this helped at all)

Ya that sounds about normal for air, and yes changing up your fans probably helped a little.

If you plan on doing more than a modest overclock, I'd would follow hostage's advice and get the H80, or the H100.

Thanks for all the feedback

Yes, I did re-orient the EVO this time to pull from bottom and push through the top.

I will start playing around with modest overclock and see what my limit is before upgrading to any liquid cooling gears down the road.

For now, I'm just happy that my temps are much more stable now and in line with what other people are getting at full load.
