Neighbors laptop won't update

He has a HP laptop that is running win7 and he got scared because of the Micsft hack and called me to see if the "internet is ok" lol Anyways, I asked him to look at Win uypdate and he said his last update was in August 2016. I told him to click search for updates and leave it for 24 hrs. He called after that and it is still searching for updates. Sigh. I Dwloaded Windows update Diagnostic but it does not even run on my pc. I am thinking of backing up his data and using the recovery drive that came with his Laptop. Any better suggestions?

Sounds like the update repository is corrupted.
I found a set of commands once that does the same thing as the update diagnostic tool, don't remember where but I have them saved as batch files.

This might help if Win7 hasn't been updated for a long time. Win Update was broken for 7 for a long time.

Stop the Windows Update service
Delete the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
Restart the service

Thanks for all the advice guys. Sorry it took me so long to get back on here but I had to wait til he was back in town to try to fix it. I started with what I thought would be the easiest starting place and tada it worked. It was what FunkZ said to do. After he deleted the folder it took about 8 hrs of searching for updates but they came through. WOOHOO! Thanks to all and a special thanks to FunkZ!

Had an issue where packaged updates (KB files downloaded from Microsoft.com) wouldn't install on W7 as it was insisting on checking for updates before installing the package.

Turns out if you restart or stop the Windows Update service (run > services.msc) it should refresh WUpdate and allows the install to go through.

It might help when looking for updates, which I did not have time to test.

Glad that it worked for you, like you said it's easy to try and more often than not fixes problems with Windows Update. And it doesn't hurt to try, basically all you're doing is erasing the history/download of what Windows has or hasn't updated and forcing it to go out and check every update again. Sometimes when an update install goes sideways it's the only way to clear it.
