You don't need to spend anywhere near that for a very good mobo.

The above boards are top notch. I really Like Gigabyte's boards these days. Much better quality than Asus.

What are you planning to use this rig for?

What other components are you looking to use?

What is your budget?

I wanted to set my budget on the high side so I didn't limit myself on options , want to build a rig that will overclock well and with relative ease, the plan is for this to be my new gaming rig. The entire system is still a work in progress , nothing is set in stone.
- gaming rig
- 2500k cpu, Z77 mb , mem is still undecided
- budget for board , cpu and mem is around 550
- only running a single gpu on current rig , will eventually up to SLI

I do appreciate the contrasting view , but don't the IB chips have heat issues at higher clocks on air ? I have plans of a single loop system but that a month or two away. I do like the Asus board , good options. The Z77 gigabyte board has that 5th sata 6gb connection which could come in handy. I've got some tough choices to make , thanks a bunch for the advice and always happy to accept more

I have to disagree with the ram, you pay almost half that for the CAS 9 and you wont notice the difference for gaming.

ive had 4.4ghz on mine without even trying, just using an 212 evo. if you're going on water then id say defo go for an ivy bridge, i read they do pretty good on water, that and you get the other goodies PCI-E 3.0 and slightly higher performance per clock

Go with IB then, my water loop is almost a waste on my 2500K; my top daily clock is 4.9GHz without dumping ridiculous amount of volts at it, yet 4.2 was borderline fine this winter on a stock cooler...

This, and SB doesn't care about timings AFAIK (unless you bench). IB is most likely the same way.
