Thumbs up Leaderboard: Battle of the fall expansions - Rift vs WoW vs LoTRO

Quote:
Thought expansions were a thing of the past for MMOs? Don't tell 2012, which has three major releases lined up this fall!
http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08...ll-expansions/

Super exciting to see who's winning so far. At just over 2500 votes Rift is in the lead with a massive 66%, WoW in second at 19%, and LoTRO in 3rd at 14%.

why wouldn't it be winning, out of those 3 it's the only one adding any real content. Player housing is a huge boost, and even though I'm not a huge fan of rift, it still beats WoW, and frankly LOTR was never really in the running.

Interesting you report 2500 votes for Rift, I only see ~1750 after I voted.

Seems abit illogical when WoW has many, many times the subscribers than Rift?

There'll still be more people playing WoW than Rift... Though I'm not knocking Rift's expansion in anyway and the new features it will bring, WoW dwarfs it. So that would imply to me far more people are looking forward to MoP than Storm Legion.

Not really. No one plays wow because it's good, everyone plays it simply because their friends are playing it. Not very many people actually enjoy playing wow because it's a never ending treadmill.

Rift is just like wow but with Rifts which adds a little excitement. Also don't let their numbers fool you. While they had 11million subscribers at one point you have to keep in mind that about 8 million of those were from China. This means you basically never would see the majority of the players. USA only had about 2 million and Europe had the rest.

So really for games that aren't releasing in China, you are comparing with a game that has 2-3 million subscribers, not 11million.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this is comparing Xpacks not the base game. WoW is adding yet another starting area, nothing really new or terribly exciting. Rift is adding new functionality (player housing) among other things which will drastically change the game.

Yeah, we're really excited to get this expansion out and lets not forget that Rift will be in China eventually and it's the biggest import deal from the west that has ever gone through the Chinese government....so we'll see where sub "numbers" (as hostage knows how they work) are after we get into that region.

ive pre-purchased mists after been away for almost 18 months, some stuff i dont like, 1 i came back, levelled my druid and healed a 10 man grp 6/8 hc within 3 weeks, and no i wasnt boosted, i topped or equalled healing on every encounter except yor (hot hater!). so like, ye getting easier with every expansion. Rift i really enjoyed when i played but i was mainly pvp. if i could warrant 2 sunscriptions id play wow and rift, also got gw2 to play. but atm for me wow > rift (just, probably cause of player community)

Yeah, the size of the community in WoW is the hard part for competition. But we're happy where we sit now, you don't need 29389022190389018 active subs to make money, you just need to be smart in how you spend it

I played rift and still play wow. I still prefer wow, though there was things i liked about rift. I will say upfront i didnt give rift a full chance (didnt try end game content).

Its funny, i havent got around to trying catacylsm and feel even less interested in pandas. I am still having a ton of fun Wotlk - bg / arenas. both of my 2v2 teams hover around 2100 team rating, just started a third
