One of the dual quad cores would be ok, but personally, I'd save the money for your 4p.

+1 whats the use, they'll work fine for single server installation for 32 or 64 bit OS versions but, they do NOT support 64 bit virtualization.

You'll get WAAAAY more PPD for your money buying GPU folding power than old low end NetBurst and Core2 Xeons.

Yes, there is a difference between 300 and 900, but it just depends on if you want an upgrade path to 300-500K ppd instead of 30-50 ppd with no upgrade path and 1/2 as much power. The AM3 idea for the short term add makes a lot of sense.

Folding for fun.

As far as I know, you can put 1 CPU in a 4p board and it runs. I think it doesn't scale right though so 1 in a 4p isn't going to work as well as in a single socket board. But you could still fold put in more CPUs and RAM later. But I've read little about it and could be wrong.

All of these servers are a waste of money. More PPD can be had with a cheap 2p rig or just a few video cards.

I don't know about that whole write off thing, you'd have to ask an accountant. Physically owning your "charity" donation just doesn't sound right lol. (as legitimate as it may be)
I made a 8 core AMD set up for about 300 bucks that I almost did. I really don't know what kind of PPD that would fetch you, but if you do that or have the capacity for more video cards that's a pretty decent route to go. I'd highly advise you start with cheaper, useable computers as opposed to expensive, server only type machines. EDIT: Generally speaking, these types of hardware. I don't know what's most cost efficient with desktop level hardware. I might be right with that FX 8120 but I don't know lol. FX-8120 GTX 570 Cheap Motherboard Second Edit: eBay is where it's at, btw. Being patient and picking off low bids gets addicting lol Last edited by Sneevly : 07-25-2012 at 03:27 PM. |

For folding you are better off with an X6 than an FX chip.
