1155 silent cooler advice
This box basically is a file server and also plays media (for watching movies etc). nothing more strenuous than that. the case is spacey and I have a near silent 120mm exhaust with passive intakes to keep the 3 disks cool, but that darned intel stock cooler whines like my little brother. Whats a good option for silence? (not water). Could I get a huge HS and no fan on this puppy? its running Debian btw.

You'll have to look for a passive cpu cooler, if you want to fanless. I came up with these two, Thermalright HR-02, and Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B. You may need an adapter for 1155.

I am a bigger "fan" of using low flow quiet fans verses using fan less because some air flow will help with your temps as the heat can build up over time with a fanless setup, especially if your only exhaust fan is already low flow.
I'd recommend grabbing a Coolermaster Hyper 212+ and just replacing the stock fan with a known quiet 120 mm one. Although the HR-02 if its within your budget and will fit in your case is a nice choice for fanless or lowest setting since its got so much surface area to hold heat. |
