Microsoft tightens grip on OEM Windows 8 licensing
OEM Activation (OA) allows PC manufacturers to ship systems with Windows preinstalled and already activated, so that customers don't need to take any additional steps to activate the OS when they first use a new computer. In the past, hackers have managed to take advantage of the OA process to activate purloined copies of Windows, which ordinarily need to be activated with a license key. Rogue OEMs have also used similar systems to avoid paying tribute to Redmond. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/08...activation_30/ |

Makes me wonder if the 'leaked' Windows 8 was merely a method to test this new activation scheme. Tinfoil hat on full-alert.

What makes you think win8 will be a smash hit enough to even bother wasting any time on activation work arounds.... just avoid that OS altogether, problem solved.

From messing with the developers and consumer previews I have a few things I like and don't like about the means of activating those. I do like how they tie it to your MS LiveID that is kind of interesting and linking it to either a cell # or the email address associated with your LiveID is both annoying and intriguing.

This is my plan for my desktop PC, Windows 7 until Windows 9, I will probably get a Windows 8 RT tablet but not 100% sure yet. If I do it'll more than likely be the ASUS Transformer but depending on the final UK price I might consider the Microsoft Windows 8 RT Surface tablet.

Lets all discuss how were going to "sit this one out" Microsoft seems to put a lot of effort into undermining counterfeits, but is it really a good use of resources? |
