It depends on what GPU you are running at the moment.

The 8400GS isn't a very powerful card, I don't think you will see any very big gains, unless your current card is VERY old.

Double your expenditures and you can get into some good PPD. I just bought an $85 MSI low-power GPU (doesn't need a PCI-E connector) and it is good for 3,200 PPD. It has 64 shaders. Some of the 9800 series are now just over $125 or so and they should be good for 4,500+ so they are maybe the best folding bang for the buck.

Don't ask why unless you want to join them.
bambihunter, I want to plunge in folding.... I have a lot of 9800 and few ati about the same... so if I get an asus supercomputer with 7 pci-e i can expect 7 * 4500 ? of course I will have to deal with the cooling betwen the card....

Ideally yes, but many have found that multiple cards do reduce effectiveness sometimes. However, if you try enough most of the times they will eventually get to nearly what they can do by themselves as long as you set CPU priority correctly, etc. and have enough system resources to keep the GPU's fed.

Many people have tried to get the ATI and Nvidia cards to fold nicely together and a few have but it has been haphazard at best. But yes, you should be able to fold with quite a few 9800's for instance on the same PC at the same time.

I have one PC with a pair of GTX280's (714/1620/1233) and an AMD 955BE OC'd to 3.8 (all water cooled) and can get around 22-24k ppd with it and I should have my other AMD 955BE with a pair of GTX295's running 4 clients + CPU going by the middle of next week. GPU folding is where the points are for sure!

I did the math on it the other day. My single-core 3.4ghz P4 takes 112 days to fold as many points as my single GTX280 GPU can do in one day.

Best cheap card was the 8800GS which now is the 9600GSO I believe. 96 shaders good for +/-4000ppd. I have an 8800GS folding and it was $65 on amazon.

For reference my 8800GT avg about 4500ppd.
