Install a PPC version of Linux. Don't expect a lot from it though, as this architecture is not supported much. The newer Intel Macs are fully supported, but the old PPC Macs still have software available.
In Linux, you can serve files to anything via Samba. There are other options for media sharing and Tivo and all that good stuff too. Honestly, a laptop is hardly a server, but it will do what you tell it. Linux is very powerful if you want it to be. The number of Linux users has increased at the same rate as the number of internet users. Linux or BSD is top-notch for servers. Even Microsoft uses BSD for it's servers. Additional Comment: Fedora image for PPC (a G3 Mac from the old world): http://mirrors.rit.edu/fedora-second...17-ppc-DVD.iso Fedora all architectures: https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/pu...dora/17/ppc64/ While we recognize the phrase "PowerPC G3", keep in mind there are 2 different architectures called "Power PC" (think Itanium). In the Linux world, you need "PPC". In the BSD world, it is a bit more complicated, but possible. The PPC Mac uses a different bootloader that is related to firmware. Basically, you hold a series of keys down when you boot to 'boot from CD'. *edit* Your PC will read the OSX partition (HSF+) only if you are able to recognize HFS+ from your PC. In example, in Linux, you can install the module to read/write HFS+ partitions. In Windows, I don't think you can use HFS+. Therefore, just don't even try. Going from mini-pata to IDE just to get a laptop HDD hooked up, it's not really a large drive anyway. How big is it, 20Gb? |
