email for kids

Hey all, I've got 2 boys, aged 8 & 11 who are just dieing to have email. I don't mind but I want it to be a safe environment.

I use Mozilla for my email.

Are there some tools I can use so that I can monitor what they're receiving and sending? The 11 yr old has already been caught googling some interesting phrases and I want to make sure he and his buddies aren't swapping pr0n. And I don't want any unsolicited crap showing up in either of their accounts either.

Thanks!

Tommy

Let the 11yo get an hotmail or a gmail account, dont use any software. If you're anal about watching them over and over then know his password.

I had an hotmail at like 9.... nothing wrong with that.

I'd say them having an email account is fine - and if they don't have one now they can probably figure it out how to get one for themselves (that you won't know about) before too long anyway.

I imagine you'd want to monitor it, and I think that's fine too. You probably want to give them a concrete age at which you think they can handle it themselves (and you won't monitor it). At a guess I'd say 13 or 14. I guess the "when I'm happy you can handle it" timeframe can work too, but then I imagine as a parent it's easy to keep putting it off.

Set up an email account for each of them, then set up a gmail account for you, and have it import all of their messages.

The first computer I remember clearly was my father's Zenith Data Systems laptop, i486 DX2 50mhz processor, 700mb HDD, Win 3.11. I forget what happened to that thing I don't think I sold it, and I hope I didn't toss it. I keep trying to remember to go up into my mother's Attic to look for it. Knowing me I was probally an idiot and Tossed it in the trash.

looked like this thing I believe
http://cgi.ebay.com/Zenith-Data-Syst...item3f067c9b5f
After that it was a Pentium 200mhz Compaq, with 2mb S3 Virge Graphics. I gamed the crap out of that ting.
Then I steped up into a Dimension L800R, Pentium 3 800mhz processor. That was really my first DIY computer. Bought a Latitude CP with a Pentium 1 233mhz cpu, played with that fora long time
Upgraded the **** out of it before I finnal made my first custom.

And the rest is History.
