supposedly the X or dot methods are best, even spread often creates air pockets
This video shows lots of different types I use AS5 I find the X method works best for that and for standard paste dot method seems to work best just my opinion mixed with spread tests

I've lapped CPU&GPU for two gens and pretty sure there is a
difference as to surface.

Always lapped the CPU's with out checking for a bad one and not being
able to return them if a problem. (Dumb), but more work.

But that was with a 2-$250.00 chip.
Don't think would have done that with a 980-990x chip though.

Saw my temps drop on all GPU cards though, so figure it helped the
CPU's as never ran the before and after in controlled test.

Tried the Dot&X method but just use a carpet blade and Q-tips for edge
cleanup. Thin coating you can barely see there's tim applied when done.
Always used AS-5.
Take them down to polished copper with 1500g last swipe.
Can get over 2000 grit in any body shop as they use it for color sanding
as I do to if want to get crazy
