Windows talk to linux distros very well?

I'm still a bit of a linux noob. I'm wanting to see if you could set up a file server that ran some random linux Desktop distro. But manage it from a windows computer. Just curious cause the linux consumes less RAM and you could get by with less. I guess I could always use XP but I've come to the conclusion that I don't really like XP anymore. After having used Vista/7 for so long, XP seems to always have something to b1tch about.
