raspberry pi - is it fruity!!!

Hi guys

I'm on the verge of buying a raspberry pi, just as a pure geek out toy and I'm looking for some opinions. This is what i intend to buy:

My intention is to learn more about oc'ing without worrying about destroying an expensive bit of equipment, but i'd also like to be able to attach an external usb hd 1tb (to watch movies etc), but does the os auto mount external hard drives or will i have to fart about every time i connect it. If any of you know i'd appreciate it and I'd also like your opinion on my suggested 'setup' (hehe).

This does nothing to teach you about overclocking x86 CPU's.

Still a cool programming toy, XBMC box, but that is about it.

Connect it to an External HDD/TV and use it to watch all your movies a cheap option if ever there was one

iirc the pi boots the OS direct from the SD card and if you have it set up correctly the HDD/SSD will boot from the OS at the end of the boot process

A 7 port hub, well that's ambition for you lol

I love using my rasp pi as a video streamer. It has enough cpu power to stream full 1080p videos up to a maximum file size of about 18GB...which is plenty for me. It also talks directly with my Samsung TV so I can control all the XBMC features with my Samsung remote.

I'm pretty sure the overclocking on that thing is all software.

You'll learn nothing about overclocking.

That said, have fun learning ARM!

Adam, what software are you running?
I'm close to pulling the trigger on one of these puppies, and could use a pointer or two

I use the raspbmc operating system. I would recommend purchasing a higher wattage power supply like 10watts or so to power any extra devices plugged into the USB ports.

I use an HP touchpad charger with mine. (10W)

I have the Model B 512mb, some cheap case. I have used, OpenELEC, RasBMC, and RasPLEX to play with. RasPlex is my personal choice because I used a plex media server in my house for everything and it gets most of its code from OpenELEC so its stable. I like OpenELEC much more than RasBMC. It seems to handle HD video much better. I also purchased the MPEG2 and VC1 codecs.

I very much enjoy messing around w/mine.
