I de-lidded my Opteron 165 and it is still running, even after switching from Heatsink and fan, to a chilled waterblock, and back to a heatsink and fan... and maybe back again, haha.

I don't think there's too much to be afraid of in trying this, although I don't remember so many steps when I did it to my Opteron!

I know have a Phenom II x4 940, and if I can get a 10c reduction in temps, then dang! I'll do it!

Haven't De-lidded anything for a while now....

So I got this Llano chip. Umm should I take the plunge and pop the top of this A8?

If you get such a cooling reduction why doesn't intel and amd make a topless cpu? Apparantly the newest ethusiest lines of sandybridge will draw around 23 amps and 180 watts alone, that's insane.

Because 99% of consumers cannot properly cool a naked cpu from the last few generations. You pretty much need a waterblock to do it any justice. Or a carefully engineered air cooler that can seat properly with the shorter chip sans IHS.
