encrypted email suggestions

Hello,

I have recently received notification from Yahoo that from now on they will be reading the contents of my email looking for more or less anything they think they can make money off of. This is not a free account, but the business web hosting service that I pay for. I find this more or less outrageous, even if it is for "customized advertizing", as they claim. I really don't want to receive any unsolicited advertizing in my business inbox, especially when I am paying for the privileged.

My instinct is to drop Yahoo immediately, but despite my annoyance at this, I am trying not to overreact. I have a feeling it will not be any different with other providers. Any communication with my clients that is particularity sensitive is already done with encrypted files as one would expect. I am not naive enough to believe that no one else have been reading my email before now. I am, however, looking at moving to encrypted email for many things. Maybe if everyone encrypts their messages there will be less of this kind of thing to begin with.

I use Seamonkey for my browser and email, which is the old Mozilla. Most things that work with Thunderbird are fine with Seamonkey as well. I have looked a bit at Enigmail, which appears might work for my end of the problem. My question is about compatibility with other email applications like Outlook. Not all of my clients will use seamonkey or thunderbird, so whatever solution I adopt will need to work easily with Outlook and probably with non-client webmail interfaces like Xfinity, Verizon, and Gmail.

Are there any suggestions about the best way to go for this? I would prefer freeware, especially if I will be asking clients to install something on their end, but I would look at payware as well as long as it's reasonable. As with most things security related, it it's not relatively seamless and easy, folks won't do it.

Thanks,

Switch to Google Business. While they do the same thing, they allow you to disable it.
