Wireless tricks for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

I'm trying to get wireless working on a couple of computers using usb wireless adapters on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I was finally able to get one adapter to work by following instructions for centos which seem to work magically. No, I haven't found those steps again, yet.

I foolishly thought reinstalling would automatically get the adapter going on the other one. The problem as near as I can tell is the MAC address isn't found for the USB adapters by the network connection applet.

In any case, I haven't found a good comprehensive list of steps to make these work and feel this has got to be easier than it is for me.

Does anyone here have a set of steps that work for USB wireless?

There are alot of wifi cards that work natively in Ubuntu, for example http://www.amazon.com/Alfa-AWUS036H-.../dp/B000QYGNKQ

Mind you that isn't the cheapest card, but I can 100% confirm it works out of the box. All I did was plug it in.

Have you tried using NDISWrapper as that helped me a few times getting wireless cards working with ubuntu

I'm having a problem finding a Windows driver in the right configuration. That is, they've been in cab files. Should I be able to extract the drivers from the cabs or windows msi files?

Whats the make and model of the wireless card ? If they are in a cab file you could probably extract them.

As long as there is an inf file along with the sys files you should be ok.

Try using the attached zip files drivers with NDISWrapper.

I pulled them from the XP driver installation.

Thanks, that doesn't seem to work either. I can install the driver, but no wireless connectivity seems to be available.

Can you post the output of "lsusb" please. This should help me to find a native driver if available or instructions to get this stick up and running.

There are native drivers at www.ralinktech.com for the RT3572 chipset which is in your edimax stick. you should check for an ubuntu howto at google how to install these drivers from source.

so you dont need to mess around with the **** ndiswrapper...

I poked around and found the source for the 3572, but I haven't found any clean instructions that work. Of course, search will return a lot of possibilities. Are there particular sites that you think would have better steps?

IIRC the Ubuntu forums is a good place to start. usually compiling drivers goes the same way on every Ubuntu version. The wiki of Ubuntu is the second place to go.

try IRC and goto the Ubuntu channel. There is usually some guys in there who will be happy to help.
