Delidding 4/5XX (Pix up)

so I've just figured out that it's possible to de-lid the IHS on the new NVidia chips. Will snap some shots later, but the chip looks pretty cool underneath

Sorry for the bad quality, cellphone cam is the only one I've got.

Weird thing, at the left bottom corner, towards the PCi-E connector, its like the core is tapered off... rounded at the end or something. Have never seen anything like that before. The card here is a 460GTX SONIC 1GB.

Pretty keen to do this with my 560, maybe when my paycheck comes in, will risk it.

This is nice! Could wind up in the Tutorial section if you tell us exactly how to do it in the OP!

If you could find a way to put the core on a corner of a table and lap it, it is doable. I had to do it to the cores of soldered cpu's to remove the solder as far down as possible. Spent a good 20 minutes with the 965BE, so I'm sure I removed a little material there.

I meant, its like the one corner just drops off. You can kind of see it on the closeup pic of the core. Left bottom corner, its like its rounded off instead of a clean edge. Lapping won't do much, because the entire core surface is very flat to begin with.

I'm REALLY considering doing this with my 560SE, if I decide to go for it, will make a detailed tutorial for you guys!

De-lidding is all well and good as long as you have a cooler that will make contact with the core without the lid on.

Ye of course. My stock one makes contact no probs. The lid is massively thick though, almost 1.5mm.
