What RAID for HTPC?
At approximately 4+ TB or data I couldn't imagine reinstalling everything. I am looking for the best RAID array to back up my current collection and have enough room for the future. I have been looking into external enclosures and NAS set ups. My current case can hold 6 hard drives. What would be the best bang for my buck? |

Although it is somewhat expensive to do right, I am a big big advocate of RAID5 or even 6 if you can swing it. RAID1 seems like a ridiculous waste of drives/space/power to me when the chances of having 2 drives fail at the same time is so small. With your setup, a decent RAID card and 3 3tb drives you are looking at 6tb of overall space plus redundancy, not terrible.
I'm going to be moving all of my media over to a 4 drive RAID5 array here shortly, can't wait to get the piece of mind that RAID offers while not losing a drive for every drive of storage. |

I know my motherboard (ASRock Z68 Pro3) will do RAID 5, do you recommend getting a card or can i get away with using my board?
And a dumb question can I add drives to the array as I go along or do I have to do it all at once? Last edited by daytona : 08-20-2012 at 05:19 PM. |

You can add volume to a RAID 5. Your manual should list the steps to take in order to migrate the RAID volume across added drives.
