Fastest Processor I Can Get

I have a Gigabyte EX58 LGA1366 mobo with an Core i7 920 2.67GHz processor.

I do a lot of video encoding and want to get the best bang for the buck. The processor I have now is fast, but I want something faster.

What is the fastest processor I can put in the this motherboard?

Would be worth it to even upgrade the processor or should I get a new mobo and processor?

Thanks.

You would be better off waiting for Intel's new line of chips which should be coming out at the end of the year. Ivy wouldnt be a bad upgrade though...

Not worth upgrading the processor for this motherboard/socket. Even today's top CPUs are only slightly faster than what you have right now.

In my opinion, there is nothing in Intel's LGA1366 line-up, that would provide a significant enough increase in performance to warrant the expense. Unless of course you enjoy looking at benchmarks.

If you would like to upgrade right now, I'd suggest going LGA2011 with either the i7 3820, or the i7 3930, Sandy Bridge processors.

Having built a number of 920, 930, 950 machines as well as the 3930 SB, I can tell you there is a noticeable difference in performance.

Once you have the 2011 socket, you should be able to upgrade to the Ivy Bridge-E, some time in the 3rd, or 4th quarter of next year, with a simple drop in replacement, and a BIOS update. There may even be a Haswell-E for the 2011 socket, although that is just speculation at this time.

Overclock your 920 to 4GHz for an 33.5% increase, just get yourself a decent aftermarket cooler and then wait for Intel Haswell to arrive Q1 / Q2 next year.

My 920 D0 @ 4.2Ghz encodes movies nicely and in a timely fashion.

An overclock to 4GHz is a 50% increase, on base clock of 2.67GHz.

Just OC and be done with it. The increase going with anything else current right now doesn't justify the price of a whole new system.

Uh oh... I fluffed the math!

I did:
Code:
(4000 - 2660) = 1340, (1340 / 4000) * 100 = 33.50%
Should have been:
Code:
(4000 - 2660) = 1340, (1340 / 2660) * 100 = 50.33%
How embarrassing!

Or even simpler, 50% increase is taking the current number and adding half of it to it, so 2666 + 1333 = 3999
