Question can't get a phone-line modem going HELP pls

okay i have never dealt with phone line modems before, and i need to install one. I plugged a PCI one into the motherboard, and Windows does not seem to be detecting it. Under Device Manager there is no modem listed. The PC is running win98se and when I try to install the YAHOO internet CD it fails part way through the process, giving me the error:

Code:
the port was disconnected due to hardware failure
The PC has no internet access without the modem installed of course. There is an icon of an "e" on one of the black chips on the modem, but I cannot figure out what the manufacturer is. Does anyone recognize this company??

What do I do? Please someone who knows modems help me out lol

thanks!!

is the modem PnP? I mean it should be, most new pci modems are...
Try running the Add New Hardware Wizard, maybe that will help the pc detect the modem.
You don't have to set it up manually, I think only the COM-port modems have to be set up manually... I might be wrong, but maybe you have to set it up manually
