The competition and the bigger goal of the project is what makes it fun and worth the fold.

For about 6 months, I folded for EOC without even checking the forums/stats/competition. I went on hiatus but that didn't make me want to disable F@H. It'd be silly in my opinion.

its not meant to be fun, its meant to make you 'feel good' which is a notion you obviously dont understand or rarely experience...we really dont want to hear you cry either... as far as im concerned you are one selfish individual as its to help peoples lives by curing diseases...one day you might have one of these diseases..its revolution and everything comes back to bit you in the ***

for the record i have never once check the stats, never enter the competitions, all that means nothing to me... every now and then i noticed my WU going up and i like to think/know that my little, tiny, microscopic contribution is helping someone, something, somewhere

that's nice..........i quit folding as I no longer believe in the "fold for a cure" methadology..I did loose my 32 yo wife to cancer (and the American Cancer Society did nothing to help, nor did her insurance as I had to beg and pleed, and sell all my liquid assets and still file for Chp 13 as I couldn'd afford the almost $300,000 medical bill for a procedure that MAY extend her life (well it didn't), she also lost her grandfather, 2 uncles, 2 aunts, 2 cousins (all on the paternal side) to cancer....i am in the medical/pharmaceutical research area.........with the almost 200K pc's folding, the ten of thousands of GHz folding, the millions of cpu cycles being spent on this.....we are no more closer to actually finding a cure than before (a few glimers of hope, but NO Definite proof), one could donate a sample of their blood to be matched for a world-wide bone marrow donation and be matched before fah discovers anything! I am a realist!....my research shows definite answers, fah does not YET show those answers and may not in our life time..so give me a break..it's a worthy cause with a very future result...and I'm no longer wanting to play....and if I do it's on my terms..so YA I am selfish.....I've lived through 5 years of f***ing hell of seeing a 28 yo mother of 2 loose her dignity, her hair, and her life.....HAVE you?

Paps, I do have sympathy for you. Going through the terminal illness of a loved one is extremely hard. I know! You are not alone in that respect. Several of us have been through it, and it's one of the reason's why we fold.

But the "way" you chose to pubicly announce that you no longer want to fold smacks of trying to rain on every one else's parade just because you no longer want to attend.

Not quite sure why you'd want to be percieved in that manner.

All I can say is I'll pray for you and your kids.

You have made your choice, I may believe differently, but it is yours to make. After that I think the rest of us need to say thank you for contributing what you did and leave you to carry on with your life.

actually i have..both grandparents died of died of cancer... my grandfather lost his eye to it... then it came back a year later, had half his face cut of, then a year later under his arm and near lungs, by this stage his face was so disfigured, then his wife was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and cripled here to a wheel chair.. both were in and out of hospitals for years... i was lying by her side in hospital when she snapped out of a coma, with eyes rolled back in head and shaking then as quick as she came out, she feel back in...that is the most scariest, upseting thing i have ever seen in my entire life..he was a pharmecutical scientist and knew the drugs he was giving his wife taking himself, he knew what they did and that they were getting stronger, he knew it they were just supressing it...i find that really creapy and sad...they both died within a year of each other, being married for 50 years exactly, one could not live without the other...he always promised he would take my mum to china...he did that..a month later he passed away... i can only imagine the pain he was in that trip but never let on to my mother... they were remarkable ppl

millions and millions of ppl around the world go through what you and i have but its no excuse imo... im sorry for your loss though

btw my grandparents were like parents

And to think, I have only lost 2 grandparents and an aunt to cancer. Oh, wait, make that 3 grandparents. I also lost my dad's best friend and my godfather. I knew my dad's best friend as well as I knew my dad, they were closer than brothers.

I'm sorry for your loss papaomax. I have never been married. I have never been lucky enough to have someone that close to me, so I can't fully empathize with you. I am sorry that you have chosen to no longer contribute. Our current medical solutions to cancer are:
1) pump the patient full of poison and hope it kills the cancer before it kills the patient.
2) expose the patent ot hgh levels of radiation and hope it kills the cancer before it kills the patient.
3) cut open the patient and pull out a chunk of flesh, and hope that the doctor got all of it.

All of these sound fairly barberic to me. I know there has to be a better way. I am going to continue to do my small part to help find it. Individualy we are insignificant. In the aggregate we are a potential solution to some of the worlds worst ills.
The next time someone I love is diagnosed with cancer I want there to be a real cure, not some barbaric treatments.

All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

We all have our reasons I guess. There are a lot of things I do that others say "Why'd you do that" and I say "cause I felt like it". I hope that I can contribute to a cure for cancer but for now it's kindof about a long term benchmark and a test of my ability to harness raw computing power.

Everyone has some reason and at some time some of us will loose our reason for folding. I just hope I have a good reason when I do, if not I'll probably just quit without all the "I'm quitting because of all you bad people" fishing for sympathy.

I've seen a few people quit in the past two weeks and I have yet to hear any one of them say... "I just don't feel like it any more.." without trying to blame it on someone Or "I just don't want to wear out my equipment", or "I just can't justify the electricity bill". Instead they try to make it a political statement of some sort.

I am well aware of that. I never said it was exciting. But he is obviously posting here just to agitate people. If you think the program is lame that's just fine, but don't give people who enjoy being part of it a hard time.

EDIT: ThatFunkyMunki, a lost cause? How so exactly? Because they haven't found a cure yet in the short time the program has been running? Boy are you ever shortsighted.

Yeah exactly. I guess it's asking too much for kids to look at the big picture though.
