OMG someone please help. I almost burned out my new AMD 64 this morning.

Ok, i woke up this morning. turned PC on...about 5-10 seconds into booting i heared this annoying BUZZ...i look thru plexi window on CPU and see the CPU FAN IS NOT SPINNING!!!!!!! i shut down ASAP...i turned on system once more...same thing 5 seconds later the CPU fan shuts down and i shut PC OFF...i unplug CPU fan from header and plugged it in again ( checking wires) nothing....ok well what i did was unplugged the power from the CPU FAN header on MOBO and plugged it into another spot on the MOBO...this system i just built and is 1 week old and this has never happened before..does anyone know what is going on? I got a AMD 64 3200 with stock cooling fan, temps are low around 34c..but like i said this system is 1 week old and this happened as soon as i powered on this morning... Got a Gigabyte GA K8NS Pro mobo...420 PS...Could anyone give me some advice as to what this can be? Is it safe to have the cpu fan plugged into another header? i cannot monitor cpu fan speed or anything now in BIOS since iam not plugged into the correct header, thanks...Also, i dont not OC anything at all...

Sounds like the heeader on ur mobo died dude. It is perfectly safe, normally I dont have my cpu fan plugged into the mobo at all. I use a molex from the psu (obviously that uses a 3pin-molex adapter). The bios should be able to monitor the other fan's RPMs though.
You might try downloading MBM5 its motherboard monitoring software it will tell you your fan speeds, if that doesnt work there is program called speedfan that will do the trick too.

it should be fine in another header; or you can run it off a molex. I might be wrong tho

Ok here is what i did (stay with me here it can get a bit confusing) i had the cpu fan plugged into the correct cpu fan header on MOBO. i also have a Vantec 80mm case fan ( the illumated ones) plugged into the power fan header on MOBO...now this morning went the CPU fan went out, i unplugged my vamtec fan from the power fan header and then plugged in the CPU dan there...all went good..so what i did just now was leave the CPU fan plugged into the POWER FAN header and plugged my vantec into the CPU fan header...and i got no errors...both worked. SO i went back and plugged the CPU fan back into the correct CPU header and it seems fine now....could it at all be? ( i doubt it) that i had a illumated fan plugged into the mobo? i dont know cause it makes no sense...i switched headers and everything is fine now..so i just removed my vantec fan for now and plugged the cpu back into its correct header and its working...can anyone make sense out of this?

Yes, as the MB fanheaders are not designed to provide much wattage.

I agree with kwiksilver & you can probable set your BIOS to shutdown if the CPU fan is not working or the CPU temp is too high.

one week old? play dumb and return/exchange/rma it unless you're confident that it was human error and not the hardware. but that's just my two cents (and now i'm poor)

You really should not run ANY fans off of the fan headers on the motherboard. A very low powered fan such as one that comes on the stock HSF is OK to run on the fan header, but nothing like a Tornado (which you said you had running on a header) or other high powered fan.

Just rma. If it a week old it shouldn't be doing that with stock hs/fan.

seeing as how nobody knows the exact problem, if there's a potential chance it's a problem w/ the mobo headers, then it's worth rma'ing. fans are pretty crude pieces of technology, i'd say it's not the fans' fault

Just plug your fan in a molex connector and it had no chance to die (except if the fan die lol)

some board had in the bios a setting, if the fan stop spinning the computer shutdown, use this setting if you have it... (unless you are watercooling )

I've got the same motherboard and have not experienced that problem at all. Ran a Stock HSF for about a week, then installed a Gigabyte 3d-Cooler... Both on the MB Header.

Since the fan is fine now, I would suspect that something got caught up in it causing it to halt, but with the money you have invested in the rig, you should not be runnig the stock HSF anyway.... Spend the $30-$40 or so on a quality unit.... ANd dont forget to Overclock! THis is Extremeoverclocking.com ya know....

I would definatly instal MBM-5 and keep an eye on everything...

Also, FYI, the Motherboard also Monitors fan speed on all 3 Fan headers on the MB. They are available in Bios and in Easy-TUne (Overclocking/Monitor software that shipped with the Motherboard)

About how many watts can a typical mobo fan header put out?
