i think we should try to keep adopt-a-rig going... sure a farm will be more production... but hell its not like we are pumping out adopt-a-rig's like crazy, what makes you think we could do it just because its diskless?

I volnteer to maintain the farm/cluster, I can set it up in my basement. I would need no compensation, folding is addictive as crack.

we are talking beowulf right? I have a few friends here who could help as well.

Yeah i'd volunteer myself too for adopting and maintaining a rig, no problem at all. No compensation needed either.

nope, id host it. i get "free" electricity and internet

i was thinking along the lines of a diskless cluster, or just a stack. reall, just putting a whole bunch of rigs together in one place, and having it belong to the team

edit: for anyone wanting to participate in adopt-a-rig (sorry, us only) jason has eoc_3 ready short of a processor. if no one calls it, im going to, and ill stick a duron1800 in it

Don't ask why unless you want to join them.
If we do actually do make a diskless farm, use Overclockix LTSP. I just set up a diskless farm with it, and it is very easy to do.

good to know. i might have to start using that. do you instal it on a server, and then have the diskless nodes do a lan boot from it?

Yep, I used an old P2 system as the LTSP server and all the nodes boot off of it via network
There is almost no configuration required with it, start LTSP server and then configure the nodes to boot from network via PXE (or floppy). It folds as soon as they boot and it is very easy to upgrade the folding client/troubleshoot it.

It is not smp-aware as such. But on the server, it always starts 2 instances by default. For clients, you might have to start a 2nd instance manually the first time around.
