hey man...if you end up getting the 9600xt just cuz u wanna have ur card right away and leave it stock, that would be lame, becuz you know I'm always around and I could show you how to softmod and OC the 9800se...or whatever. so keep that in mind. yep I know, yet another thing to complicate the decision

EVERYTHING YOU SAY IS PERSONAL BIAS, NOT ACTUAL FACT!

anyways, if some1'll help you with that 9800, go for it
if you don't think you need the biggest and best, grab that 9600
ok, ive taken your **** for long enough. the 9600xt is a POS. its for those of us who cant afford a real card. the bang per buck ratio of a 9600xt is far lower than a 9800se 256bit or refurb $150 9800pro. if you challenge this, youre clearly ******ed, but knowing you youre going to challenge it

I personally have a 9600xt with a vga silencer OCed it runs doom 3 on high fine, CS:S at like ave 60-70 fps, UT2004 runs perfect too....so it's not a POS...you have to look at his budget and what he can get, I liked my 9600XT it has done fine no problems at all. I'm looking to upgrade to a x800 in the near future but the 9600xt is by no stretch a POS..

i'd say go for it, if it's your budget
it's better than most $105 cards
if its top of the line, how is it older midrange

ehh i guess i'm being too much of an ******* here against the 9600 series, sorry i just have a grudge against the whole series

i mean its your choice on what you get, i just advise against the 9600xt even if its for 105$. IN MY OPINION 150$ for a 9800 pro is a much better deal because it will last longer than the 9600xt. who wants to drop 105$ for a card, then have to upgrade in 6 months to a year for another card, while you can spend a bit more now, but be set for at least a year?

I understand what your saying onewecallgod, but if he only wants to spend the $105 or whatever for the 9600 and he dosn't care...then it dosn't really matter...

onewecallgod: (do you really have a PowerColor 9600 Pro or is that just an old sig, maybe i know why you have a grudge )

yes i still currently use my powercolor 9600 pro. i dont want to upgrade yet because my money needs to go elsewhere, but the x800 pro vivo looks like something i want to get soon.
i've had a sapphire 9600 pro (might as well call it an xt because it did 540 out of the box) and now i have this powercolor. i guess its an alright card if you dont want eye candy, but i want AA/AF ****it!

I liked my old 9600XT, it wasn't an awesome card, but it was decent for the price and it gave me decent framerates at high options in UT2004. It overclocked nice at stock, but I really wanted a 9800Pro so I returned the 9600XT and got it. If your not upgrading in a while and don't want to spend more than that certian amount, go with the either the 9800SE if you want to softmod it and overclock or the 9600XT if you want to remain at stock

Well, I hate to throw this in (especially in the ATI section) but I just found a great deal on a 5600U for $95. Can anyone tell me if this card is comparable to the 9600XT?

Yeah the buy wait game sucks but,,, what are you gonna do wait forever.
I have a 9600XT AIW in my other system I use it to LAN and it works fine. Im not sure but bjut it thought I saw a 9800 pro on Newegg for 155. You could flash that to an XT and kick some real ***. Any way you go go cheap.

the 9600XT keeps on par with your system's general level of power
the 9800Pro is a little above, but some people put way to powerful gfx card in their comp (like way to huge rims on their cars)

i'd look at some benchmarks, and really think about it

EDIT
alright reviewd your rig a little
how about a GeForce4 Ti-4200 (could another peep offer another opinion also) it's about $90, I can link you if you want...

it's also retail new
or a Ti-4600 for $120

the 9600XT is going to be fast, a lot faster than your current, but it's not the best
i'd suggest getting it
if you trust where u getting it, also the 5700nu might be an option (like $120 new)
Dont listen to this guy...hes a cool guy and everything, but his views on this thread isnt the best...Check out some Radeon 9800SE 256bit....Alot of them are flashable to r9800P/XT...........

However if I left it at stock, the 9600XT would be better right? I'm deff leaning toward the 9600XT right now

so you would think. its kinda like "yeah...i'm gonna win the lottery, cash it in, and man it'll be beautiful" Like "god" said, its a refurb cuz it wasn't mod-able in the first place.

Aragorn...if you wanted to go with the 9800se and try your hand at soft-modding, I would recommend getting one new which would run around $130. Maybe a bit above your price range. Otherwise you could hunt around for a used one that you know for certain will be mod-able.

Otherwise it seems to me like you're really leaning toward the 9600xt. I think that if I was in your situation with your budget and all the other factors, that's what I'd go with. The only other thing is that you could check around for some lightly-used ones and maybe save 10-20 bucks.
