They are OK, they are still a generic type of PSU though, dirty power comming threw it. If you can not afford a Enermax or Raidmax PSU, then look at a Antec PSU...with the way things are going, look for at least a 400+W PSU.

I got this old PSU from my friend it was from is Pentium 1, its only 250 watt so I don't think I will be using it. Are most PSU's AMD and Intel ready?

The oldier ones like that are AT PSU and AMD and Intel MB are 99% ATX now.

As for most PSU's being AMD & Intel ready, yes most are. Now most are not P4 ready though. And with the new T-Bred there will be a 35AMP min. on the PSU. Also the GF4 Ti cards require a min. of a 350W PSU.
