AHHH 10.3v off the 12v line?!
It maintains decent voltages though, all voltages being perfect except for a constant 11.77-11.86 on the 12v line... I just took the psu apart, and cut the connectors on the led's in the fans, and took the 8 leds out of the 2 fans... Now I boot up, and im at 10.3 volts! It drops to 10.17 when I kick my cold cathodes on!!! What gives? All I did was remove led's, if anything, it should help the voltage out!? Will this hurt my computer to run it like this? It seems stable, im at 100% load folding.. edit: ok I paused folding, and it jumped to 11.3-11.4... Still way short of its usual 11.7! Ugh, been folding 3 days straight at 11.77volts, and now its way way low |

software that came with my motherboard However I had a multimeter a couple days ago, and the software **** near matches the multimeter... except I gave my friend back his multimeter and i'l have to wait tell at least tommorow to get it again. Its crazy, i even had ELEVEN 80mm fans on my 12v line when I first got the comp, but I moved 5 of them to the 5v line, and my 6 radiator fans on a external power supply.... edit: that software being "smartguardian" |

I know how to check voltages..
But I mean, even if the software is off, why would it go from 11.77 just before I remove leds, to 10.3 after I remove the leds? I dont think the software just became really inaccurate during the led removal.. maybe? |

uh..
I got another friend with a analog multimeter.. One that a needle goes back n forth.. I set it to the 10 DCV setting, and it shows my 5v line as 4v, and the 3.3 at like 2.5... But it also shows a 1.5v aa battery BRAND NEW at 1v..... How am I supposed to set this thing to check voltages? Theres no way its showing me the right voltage |

It's better to use digital multimeters to measure voltages accurately Analog multimeters are better to watch trends of changes in voltage, because digital ones have some lag |

when you want accurate readings always use a digital meter. They self calibrate each time you turn them on and are easier to read. Analog meters are nice for quick, non-essential measurements, as they can become inaccurate even straight out of the box. This is because if you drop it from as little as 1 foot and it lands the right way, the needle will be off.

holy crap im a IDIOT...
I spent the time to route all my wires and crap right.. but I didn't even plug in the 4 prong connector to my mobo! I was pulling my psu back out so I could check the fans to make sure nothigns crossed.. Then I unplugged all the wires but the 4 pin one, and relized it was already unplugged.... So much for the warning all over my motherboard "NEVER OPERATE WITHOUT PLUGGING IN THE 4 PRONG ATX CONNECTOR, FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RUIN YOUR MOTHERBOARD!" lol good thing im sending this mobo back in for a rma soon >< |

If you continue to run your computer at a significant undervolt you should expect damage to other components. I seriously doubt that disconnecting the LEDs would cause a change in output voltages. It is more likely that something else was unknowingly damaged. If you are committed to messing with the PSU further may I suggest that you unplug both fans from the internal 2-pin connectors. You could then temporarily replace them with a couple of case fans and retest the voltages. Of course the best idea would be to immediately remove the power supply and toss it into the trash.
^ ^ ^Your post just appeared. I hope it was just the 4-pin mobo connection. ^ ^ Last edited by Josie Wales : 02-21-2005 at 09:21 PM. |
