I don't see how a DVD burner could be considered any more questionable than a CD burner. After all, people can make VCDs on a CD burner all day long.

DVD burners can be used for:
1) Making legitimate backups of purchased DVDs.
2) Backing up large amounts of created data (if you use Bryce, Maya or Poser you know).
3) Backing up an image of a clean install (usualy about 2GB... try to fit that on a CD)
4) Large pr0n collections (come on, you know Leon's pr0n stash has to be a whole spool of DVDs).
5) Backing up large amounts of purchased data (see #2)
6) Transfering VCR format movies to DVD (it's perfectly legal to do so, you purchased a licence for the data that is the movie, moving that data to another format is acceptable)
7) Converting publicly available mpg/rm/wmv files for viewing from a DVD player.

I own 3 DVD±RW drives and a DVD-ROM drive. I probably burn somewhere between 10 and 15 data DVDs a month ( they're great for archiving Ghost backups ). I also archive a lot of free Divx content that I download as well as md5 summed backups of my games.

Mine are Pioneer DVD-116, DVR-107, DVR-A08XL, and a Toshiba something-something-something in my laptop.

Only thing a dvd-burner is seriously useful for is pirating movies and games.

And the few rare people who have to burn loarge amounts of data for other people on a regular basis, probably some strange job.
There are alot of people within the media realm that need to burn data all of the time. The place i was working had loads of external HDD's everywhere, all 250GB because when you goout to shoot a music video or any video for that matter, it takes up alot of space (5 films for my last edit was around 48GB of data). Obviously the finished product is much smaller, so when you need to take it to the graphics guys, or show your devision leader what you have done you obviously use DVD's rather than carrying a HDD around with you. I'de hardly call that a "strange job", and they are seriously useful for many other things aswell.

ill be soon to buy one, as i need to back up some things, of which a dvd makes much more sense than lots of cd's.. things like steam game backups especially

but i currently have a dvd-rom/cd-rw combo drive, so ive selected dvd-rom as its the dvd media the poll is regarding

I use my DVD+R's to burn information to disc that I don't want to keep on my HDD, or to back up files and etc. I also didn't jump on the DVD Burner train till I built a whole new rig, I wanted a one but I didn't see much point to buy one just to buy one so I basically took advantage of an opportunity.

DVD Burner with Dual Layey, i use them to backup, or atleast i did until i got a second hard-drive.

Either way, i really helps when you have to move alot of files or have multiple CDs of data you want to store (like condensing a group of CDs onto a DVD).

The same "Controversey" came out when CD burners came out, at that time (and ofcourse it will sound like this archaic time during a massive war across the empire [vivid much?]) files wernt as big as they were now, the people that had huge files allready had DAT or other tape mediums (i know i had a DAT drive before CD burners got big). In general, the consumer didnt need a reason to have that much data in one place.

When Blu-Ray/HD-DVD comes out people will just forget about DVD/DVD-DL, it's kinda how it works, the new guy gets beat on until someone replaces him. Jadig?

i actually own both now - a combo DVD/CDRW and a dual later DVD+/-R

mostly use the CDRW for burning backups of files (drivers, software, etc) and the DVD burner for movies or shows I download online, instead of making a SVCD and burning to a CD-R

I have an older 4X Pioneer DVD burner that my bro-in-law gave me. I have only burned one DVD of MP3s, but my DVD player hooked to my TV/Stereo couldn't read it. I will probably start burning home movies onto DVD, because they are taking up a lot of space on my PC. I have a Canon Powershot S-1 digital camera that takes really nice videos, but they are about 90 MB/min. I probably have at least 40 GB of movies over the past year .

I also had this bright idea to convert all of my audio CDs to mp3s and put them all on one DVD and then play it in shuffle mode on my DVD player. Unfortunately, my cheapo DVD player couldn't read it . What do you expect from a $40 DVD player?

RW DVD+R DL, RD DVD+ReWriteable, DVD R/RW, compact disc rewriteable

44$ on newegg, no coasters yet for about 2 months, hope it stays that way.

i use it to make regular backups of all my critical files and pictures.
