first installations faster?

is it true that the first bit of data written to a formatted hdd will be able to be accessed quicker. for example, if i format and install a particular game first thing i will get better performance then if i were to install it on an old system.

also what does the pagefile.sys do and how do i optimize it?

Yes it's true that data written to the "begining" of a hdd is accessed faster but probably not enough to notice any difference. If you were using a large hdd it would be an advantage to make a couple partitions and install the os to the first partition etc.
Some people think there is an advantage to moving your pagefile to a separate hdd. I would doubt that your pagefile gets much use because you have plenty of ram. What I do is make a partiton on a separate hdd, the size I want my pagefile (2.5g) and use that.
