yeah, so long as the univeristy is willing to accept the extra expenses of running the machines like that, it should propell us into 3-4 place easily. I'm hopefull.. but honestly I don't think they're going to go along with it... it takes about $50 to run one of those beasts all the time like that a month..and an extra 30K in expenses probaly won't sit well with them each month..

all else fails... my Celeron D 2.53ghz and Pentium M 1.7ghz will be up again tomorrow.

Yeah Seph, that does sound pretty nice. I hope they go for it, i know that would not fly here at work so i wont even bother asking.

Can't say for sure how many PPD that would be.. but my guess would be assuming each can do 250ppd minnimal.. 112.4K-270k ppd?

Seems high to me. Using the data from this thread my P-D 840 was using 150W folding and 80W idle. The P-D 930 should use less since it's the 65nm process. 150W at 24x5 is about 75 kWh per month, which at 10 cents per kWh is $7.50. Even adding air conditioning costs shouldn't reach $50.

And that is the total power consumption of the system. If you subtract out the idle or standby power, the difference in power due to folding is less.

But if he's like most IT guys, you need to be really careful about how you discuss this. You could ask how he calculates the $50 first, then compare to my data to see if it's worth pursuing. Maybe they are adding in expected support costs and replacement costs under some assumption about failures per hour.

You could also ask for some, not all, of the boxes for folding. You could also point to the Stanford stats for eastms.edu which show over 700 boxes folding. And it sounds like you have already done this, but the educational info on the why's of folding always helps.

Good luck!

I hope your allowed to do this. Think about all the extra research that will be being done, not to mention all the points our team will be getting.

I would love to beable to do somethin like this at my school however i see little chance in the IT staff allowing me to do this.

I think that what we need here is a montage.

The hours approaching, just give it your best
You got to reach your prime.
That’s when you need to put yourself to the test,
And show us a passage of time,
Were going to need a montage (montage)
Oh it takes a montage (montage)
Sure a lot of things happing at once,
With mind, everyone what’s going on (what’s going on?)
And when every shot you show a little improvement
Just Show it or it will take to long
that’s called a montage (montage)
Oh we want montage (montage)
And anything that we want to know, from just a beginner to a pro,
You want a montage (montage)
even rocky had a montage (montage)

(Montage…montage)

Anything that we want to know, from just a beginner to a pro,
You need a montage (montage)
Oh it takes a montage (montage)

Always fade out in a montage,
If you fade out, it seem like more time
Has passed in a montage,
Montage

Are we all folding faster now? I know I am.

got back with him today, after asking more about that $50 figure, he said that he was factoring in replacement costs and not just the electricity required for the processors. The dean suffice to say.. rejected my proposal after hearing that figure...

Did you point out that it wasn't exactly fair to attribute the entire cost of ownership to FAH, as they already are burdened with that cost even if they don't fold?
If:
electricity = $10/month
and PC lasts 36 months (yes, it will last a lot longer even when folding)
Then over 3 years the replacement cost of the PC "Due to folding" will = $40 x 36 = $1440.

What you need is another educational IT head, who does fold, to give an estimate of the additional cost/PC to you. Then you have some ground to stand on.

The reasons why your IT head submarined you could be:
1) He just doesn't like you.
2) He is already folding and didn't want someone stepping on his toes.
3) He is incompetant and lazy and didn't want to deal with it.
4) He's an idiot.

If you want to press the issue, you need to either find out which is the situation, or be prepared to deal with all of them.

If they're already running em 24/5, whats the difference. Those expenses should already be factored in.

You should ask if you could fold on only a few of those computers and work from there. Even if you could use 10-20 of them, that would be a great help to our PPD.

ROFL. Was expecting just that. They have all the power and no capability to think clearly.

Anyway, ABXZone seems to have levelled at some 115k ppd. We can easily catch up to that. And maybe i will get my Intel Pentium D 805 soon too

Keep folding.
