Rapid progress in P-OLEDs: Q&A with Terry Nicklin and Ian Chao of CDT

The Cambridge, UK, based CDT is a pioneer of solution-processable polymer materials for OLED displays, and the company advocates all the technical advantages of OLED displays, particularly in comparison with TFT-LCD, coupled with all the advantages of inkjet printing. The advantages of P-OLED technology are of course well known. Chief among them are its microsecond response time, and the emissive nature of the display, which does not require backlighting, as does TFT-LCD, for distinct cost and time to market advantages. Inkjet printing, argues CDT, is a proven, robust and scalable technology that can be applied to the manufacturing of displays. However, the printable polymers themselves are still undergoing evolution ? albeit rapid evolution ? and have still to get to the point where their lifetime will satisfy the needs of the TV market, for example, at a high enough brightness. In the meantime, OLED technology of all flavors is making rapid progress and has already made significant inroads into the MP3 player and handset markets.
