I'd say reinstall the OS and then mobo drivers , DX8.1 , vidcard drivers . It's better this way .

i hate fdisk! Are you sure that I couldnt just go in and delete every file dxdiag lists? Or would that be too dangerous?

I think it would be unsafe , because DX is related to vidcard and soundcard drivers , so you could mess it up bigtime .

Is there any way to "catch" the files that it temporarily decompresses and manually installing them? 8.1 says that it installs, but REFUSES to install. It definately says directx 7

Could I try to reinstall the upgrade way? It says that it will keep the settings and stuff. Or should I just wait until dx9 comes out, unless anyone has the beta installer they want to hook me up with. I could give someone the passw and have them log on to my account and put it on there
