'Phase change' memory chip may make flash obsolete

For those that don't use Yahoo! or missed this...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061211...a_061211134556

Quote:
A team of scientists has announced a breakthrough in computer memory technology that heralded more sophisticated and reliable MP3 players, digital cameras and other devices.

Scientists from IBM, Macronix and Qimonda said they developed a material that made "phase-change" memory 500 to 1,000 times faster than the commonly-used "flash" memory, while using half as much power.
Article does not say how it reads/writes to it. They mention the same tech is used in CD/DVDs? Guess they are talking about the transformable inks in RWs(?)

this was in the latest edition of PC magazine as well. Pretty much whenever the substance is solid, it'd represent a 1 or 0, and same with liquid. Really promising technology.

Now this looks interesting. I wonder if it'll replace HDs, CDs, and DVDs in the near future. That would be nice.
