How to install Ubuntu(64 bit) and SMP client
+ + Disclaimer: This worked for me but may not work for you, so it is of course a risk + to use this how to, if anything gets messed up you have been warned. + + ------------------- Now to get started: Visit http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu/download and download the 64 bit version. Please note that this was written using version 6.06 so some parts may be different. Once you have obtained and burned a copy of ubuntu boot with it in your CD Drive and make sure that the BIOS is set to boot to the CD first. When you get to a selection screen you will have a number of options to boot. You will want to choose the one "Install or Run Ubuntu" then it will proceed to boot to a desktop. Once there double click on the icon called Install. When the window pops up choose your language, easy Then press ForwardNow pick your timezone etc from the next section, again easy press Forward again.Choose keyboard layout and continue. Fill out the next page with all the info needed, easy right? If you have a current Operating system that you do not want to remove select the option to resize the current one. If you want to remove everything on the Hard Drive then select to erase the entire disk and continue. Once you have finished the install select to restart the computer. upon reboot open a console, then type 'mkdir FAH' It will be a good idea to setup a root password, to do this run "sudo passwd root" and do what the console says. After that go to http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html and download the SMP client. save the client to /home/[username]/FAH/ Extract the .tgz file in the FAH folder then run the client as per the instructions on Stanford's website. You may have to install the 32 bit libraries, to do this just run "sudo apt-get install ia32-libs" If you have installed the 32 bit libraries and are still getting a permission error when trying to run the fah5 file then try running "sudo chmod 777 fah5" Then try running fah5 again And you should be good to go. An alternate for you would be to do as KB said(copied here for easy reference) right after you finih installing ubuntu and setting up the root password and the 32 bit libraries Quote:

Ok, first question: I have the OS installed, I created the directory, downloaded the .tgz file; un tar'd it, but when I try to run "./fah5 -configonly" (from Stanford's site) I keep getting:
bash: fah5: command not found It's frustrating me, all I know about windows, dos, etc, and when I get to this I get confused trying to click something. :angry HELP!!!! |

When I installed ubuntu, it disabled root by default. I used the command
passwd root then used my same password to set the password. When at a prompt, type in 'su', the system will prompt you for the password, type it in, and your login will change to 'root'. This will give you full admin privileges and should be able to run the command KB gave us. |

passwd root
passwd: You may not view or modify password information for root su Password: (used my pw) su: Authentication failure Sorry. su Password: (used blank since I never set one for a su) su: Authentication failure Sorry. Any more ideas...? |

Yeah, go to System > Admin > Users and Groups
Fairly standard interface at that point, can change the root password there. |

Yep, that worked. Thanks for your help! Thanks for the guide cuog. You may want to add the thing about the 32bit library thing that killer suggested in the other thread. Flesh it out a little more, give specific examples, and we'll pm a mod to see about being a bona-fide Sticky! (or at least perhaps added to another)

Another way to install the SMP client is using Ivoshiee's (from the Stanford forums) finstall script. It will download the client and other useful tools, set up the directories and scripts, and even set it up as a service if you want.
Once you have installed Ubuntu (or most any other 64-bit distro for that matter) Open a terminal window Code:
wget http://ranume.radionet.ee/folding/finstall
chmod +x finstall
./finstall smp
{ answer the questions as best you can, use defaults if you don't know}
~/foldingathome/installService
~/foldingathome/folding start
Code:
~/foldingathome/folding stop ~/foldingathome/folding start One nice thing about his scripts is that they can clean up a hung or dying client (using the stop command) without needing to manually find process numbers etc. |

Well since it started here and its for here, I'll ask here. I set up Ubuntu, got everything installed, ran the 80+ updates, installed the 32bit stuff, got folding running, basically everthing runs fine; but it wont reboot. Not that I'll have to use it that often, but when I tried to reboot, I got a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper-left and everything was locked and it just sat there. Any ideas? (This happened on both machines I have set up now.)

hey glad to see this getting some use, i just got my 7600 so I've been well distracted the past few days. With Linux i never use Reboot because each one of my systems always has some issue with it. I usually call "sudo HALT" and after it turns off I just press the power button to turn it back on.
For the how to I will add more of the details later(dinner's almost ready) |

Installing this will set it up as a separate OS. So that you can either run Ubuntu or Windows, but not both at the same time, correct?

If you want to run both wait until you get your 6400 cpu to set up the VMware. The VMare will not work on your current processor (631).

It should be good to go now, as I see little pitfalls that people have and help them I will probably add little bits to this.

It worked perfect for me, once i started using a conroe core instead of my p4d945. It might be worth mentioning that you can only run this stuff on either native 64 bit operating system with 64 bit hardware,, or on a core that supports virtualization with 64 bit hardware from within windows 32 bit.
