Big Set of Microsoft Security Patches Coming Tuesday

Microsoft plans to release 12 sets of security patches next Tuesday fixing critical vulnerabilities in a number of its products, including the company's new security software. The bulk of the patches will fix flaws in the Windows operating system and Office, Microsoft said in a statement published today on its Web site. Five of the updates will be for Windows and two of them will be for Office. Microsoft also plans to release one less-critical update that addresses flaws in both Windows and Office.

The patches will be released as part of Microsoft's monthly cycle of security updates. There will also be patches for Microsoft's Step-by-Step Interactive Training, Microsoft Data Access Components, and an update that covers both Windows and Visual Studio. Finally, Microsoft will also publish an update that patches critical flaws in its Windows Live OneCare, Antigen, Windows Defender, and ForeFront security software

Personally I'm hoping the Microsoft makes the daylight savings time [DST] update high priority so I can finally stop pointing folks to the Software Optional section of Windows Update so they can select KB928388. Microsoft has been saying since december than once the Outlook/Exchange DST updates are ready the windows one would become high priority.

Don't ask why unless you want to join them.
It seems to me that you can never have 100% software, so why try? These patches just seem to make things work differently which another hacker can make a hack for.

I don't think MS will ever have wireless working 100% bug free... Too much depends on the manufacturer drivers, interoperability between different manufacturers, and a host of other things.

MS patches remind me of that James Bond movie where the Carver guy was releasing some software "Yes sir, it is full of bugs as requested, forcing people to upgrade for years to come...."

How about better drivers first? If its so much more 'secure' why security patches immediately?

The ONLY reason Im not upgrading is b/c of driver support.

Doesn't vista ONLY allow signed drivers to be installed?

IIRC, RC2 allowed you to install not signed drivers. Same as XP.

What do you think MS does when it builds a patch? Finds an impenetrable way for hacker not to get in? You are joking with yourself if you think this is true.

Just did a quick google... Apparently I was slightly off...

The x64 version of Windows Vista will require all kernel-mode code to be digitally signed.

I hope to god you have NEVER corrected any error in anything you have ever done. If you have, please, give it a rest, if you haven't, please, give it a rest.

You want to know what I think MS does when it builds a patch. The same thing every other company does when it builds a patch, corrects a particular flaw in the current release. It's a good thing you'll never make it into development of any sort so it doesn't really matter what your thoughts on the matter are.

So what you are saying is that because we CAN make mistakes we should just leave them? Basically, lets say MS releases a OS with a huge bug that every time you click on "My Computer" it restarts your computer. By your logic we should not fix this and leave it alone.

I agree that software will always have flaws, but I can't believe you would suggest that we simply never fix them. This can spread in to any machine. If this were the case, car crashes, plane crashes, train crashes, all of these things would happen multiple times a day with many deaths.

Basically, I think this is a ridiculous statement.

Fourth - Just let it go, and that's all I'm going to say.

Please stick to the subject people about the releases today...

I noticed on one of my computers that booted up the little shield popped up with all of them. I haven't updated my notebook yet, probably should do that now, also I'm going to read what each of the updates are.

It does look like a daylight savings update was in that group of the auto-updates. :P

Any idea on the sizes of the patches?

Sorry Jason. I didn't see you post until after I had submitted mine.

Let me put it another way. Death.

There is a lot of talk about curing cancer, stopping heart disease, etc... The fact is, we are all doing to die. I put it to you that instead of trying to fix the problem, i.e. dying, you accept it and move through it, i.e. eternal life.

This analogy makes the point that nothing is perfect, except the Lord Jesus, and that any fix will only be temporary.

Dude you guys stop violating the rules. Jason said for one member to stop, and I'm sure it carries with the rest of the members here who are violating a direct order. He puts a lot of time into these forums so if he thinks a topic is getting out of hand you should listen.

Anyway, yup it's definitely Patch Tuesday. At least they did some good updates that were worthwhile.
