Help troubleshooting a Mac
1. How would I go about re-installing the OS? 2. Is there a way or a command or keystrokes I can use to give me more information about the computer (bios info ect.) 3. Anyone have any idea where to start? (I'm a PC guy if this isn't plainly obvious by now) Thanks guys |

Sounds like a memory issue to me, try one stick at a time(assuming more than one is already installed.
If you want to just go ahead and do a reinstall, when the CD/DVD is in hold down the "C" key and it will boot from the CD/DVD and an installer will come up. Or you can always give safe boot a try http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393 You can also try booting in Verbose mode using Command(the apple key) and V(after the chime, same way you'd use c), this will go through all the systems and items accessed/required for boot and whichever one it gets stuck on is likely the problem. There are some other key combos here: http://www.everythingtech.tv/2006/05...key-sequences/ Good luck. |

I actually figured that out about 10 minutes before I read your response. I had posted the same thread at another forum that has a pretty large mac user population and I got about 15 responses and not one person mentioned the memory

Well good job then, that first gray screen is about equivalent to a POST screen so if a machine gets stuck there it is usually a hardware prob.
