Right now I have Vista Ult 64 on dual boot with XP Pro 32, other than wanting a new feel for something else, a change in scenery, I only use XP. Most of the benching, monitoring and overclocking tools don't work on Vista 64. Making it kinda pointless if you have overclocking in mind.

Unfortunately, I will have to wash my hands with Vista as Microsoft has confirmed that they will not remove the DRM that is built in (making it impossible for me to manage my music library as I like to do).
If you could tell me about the above I'd appreciate it. I'd like to put vista on my HTPC but if it's going to make playing the myriad of different audio and video file formats I need it to play a pain in my *** I'll stick to XP or try to find a copy of XP media center edition..

Actually if you could just detail your trials and tribulations using vista to manage your music I'd appreciate it..

I wish I could get my hands on a cheap/free trial/eval copy of vista premium home with all the Aero functions and the Media center crap so I can try it out and see if it's a nightmare to use with my media collection or if it'll make organizing my stuff easier.

Something tells me if it's not a licensed WMA or WMV Vista is going to tell me to kick rocks when I try to play it..

I tried it ( Vista Ultimate 32bit ) out on a spare drive I have. I had no problems with the install as my hardware is less than a year old but those with older hardware will run into problems. A few of my key applications didn't work correctly so I'll have to wait for Vista versions to be released before I migrate from XP. I haven't installed any games to the system yet, but I will assume that a lot of them won't work.

IMHO. The Ultimate version isn't worth $400. If you want your desktop to be pretty just switch to Linux or download any number of themes for WinXP and wait until the kinks are worked out. The UAC and the Run as Administrator crap is pretty annoying. UAC can be turned off but I didn't figure out how to launch stuff as administrator w/o using All Programs list. I was logged in as admin. but still didn't have full control over certain things.

I too was *considering* vista for my HTPC to upgrade from Media Center 2005. But since MS has very few screenshots of vista media center, and I can't really find any compelling new feature that I need... I guess I will just stick with MCE05...

I would run Linux on the machine, but it's a craptastic old ATI RX chipset and Linux kernel crashes when trying to load.

Yeah I'm sporting an VIA Chipset MSI board and an ATI 9700Pro something tells me Linux would be a headache to get working...

Not to mention compatibility issues between Linux and the HTPC's primary user.... My girlfriend

I need to get a good look at MCE2005 and decide if it'll give me the functionality I want..

Right now I play everything using VLC media player or the player built into Nero..... But VLC's playlists leave ALOT to be desired... The nero player is good but it doesn't support ALL formats.. Actually I just got it so I'm not 100% on how functional it is.

Has anyone tried using VLC media player on Vista 32bit? I'll be bummed if it doesn't work since it's been my old standby for ages...

I'm sure many are like me, but I'm hoping to put Vista in my rig (may/june summer build), but I can/will always wait until I feel that its fully supported. My friend who has a Toshiba Qosimio G35 recently bought Ultimate. What is it, $300? Jeez, thats a 360 right there. Guess what? No Aero, no audio. Isn't that awesome? Sure you get "MS Defender" and "Better safety features" ... BS! If anyone wanted safety they wouldn't install Windows. They just want the compatability and the features that one could have with XP, but sadly, Vista isn't there yet.

Running my comp and lappy on Vista 64 Home Premium.
So far... I have not encountered any serious bugs. It's annoying when people yell "Zomg I need to wait for teh bugs to go awaYZ!" when they really haven't tried it for themselves. If you're using mainstream hardware, 64 bit drivers are abundant now-adays. I have not any any issues whatsoever. Actually I lied, for some reason Premiere Pro 2 doesn't work on the 32 bit edition... but I use 64 so no matter.
Vista looks really great... navigation is ten times better than in xp... searching and hd indexing works very very fast, live preview in alt tab etc. etc... great OS.

@Leviathan: I don't need to try it for myself; my friend has showed me his laptop and it clearly doesn't work for him. We can all take (for granted) that XP Home will install on a decent/recent system. You definitely cannot expect a guaranteed clean install on a decent/recent system.

MS isn't helping either. The techs they reply with have no idea what to do and simply suggest "Oh why don't you go ahead and click this and that. Oh thats weird. Why don't you try reinstalling and loose all your data. Hmm doesn't work? I dunno.."

I guess that's the problem with first generation technology.

I've been using VLC on my Vista RC2 32bit box for months & it works great. I only use it to play & stream mpeg4's captured by my ReplayTV.

one machine has Vista 32 bit ultimate edition. I really like the built-in search functionality but hate the way it bogs down performance. I really like all the new enhancements to the Windows Explorer shell, but also hate the way they bog down performance. Maybe if I get a fast enough CPU and say 4GB of RAM I'll be able to live with it.

Don't ask why unless you want to join them.
Maybe when DX10 comes out in full swing, Vista WON"T affect my meager 2GB RAM() and I won't get 50FPS in CS:S(seeing as how I get 130FPS) -stress tests.

Vista's a hog.

Haven't tried Vista in a while... also, I can't OC my 7900GT, so I know it should be missing around 30-40(but it still doesn't excuse 1600x1200 to 1280x1024)

For some reason, some people run things FINE, and some don't.... :/
-But listen, Not at ALL am I saying it's EVERYONE's Vista, just MY experiences, so I don't speak for everyone...
