750 watt Ultra or 700 watt OCZ

Hey guys, i'm looking to put together a nice setup and psu is now the question. SLI will be a future investment so headroom is needed. Calculated power requirement for the sli came to 660 watts for the machine. I'm left to decide between Ultra / X-Pro / 750-Watt / ATX for 199.99 and the OCZ / GameXStream / 700-Watt / ATX. for 179.99. Which would be better quality or best choice to go with?

I've tried to find a review for the Ultra 750watt but nothing comes up, so i'm left to conclude that this thing is either a piece of ****, or it just came out. Neither of those are selling points for me, so it might just have to be the OCZ. Anyone got a reason for me to buy the Ultra?

No reason for the Ultra, OCZ is a much higher quality PSUs (their PSUs are Fortron Epsilons)

as you can plainly see

The Ultra X-pro is an excellent Quality unit ..OW has one and says it one of the best built he's ever owned.

If it's ok by him it's more than OK by me. Don't rule out the Ultra so quickly

Here's a review of the X-PRO 600W

From personal experience with Ultra PSU I would never recommend one to my worst enemy. There customer service just plain out right SUCK!!! I used to defend Ultra PSU's, I had mine for about two years and then it justed died. Ultra RMA department would not do anything about it even though it was still under warranty.

If you purchase a Ultra PSU just pray that it will last you!

Incorrect - this particular Ultra is OEM Seventeam, and one of their best server grade units at that. To knock it is to knock the little brother of the Silverstone Olympia 1kW. TBH, I'd rather have it than anything OCZ short of the Evostreams - the Epsilon/Gamexstream line doesn't measure up.

Didn't even notice who they sourced that PSU from Ultra PSUs tend to mean crap so I didn't even think to look for a source of that one.

Don't ask why unless you want to join them.
Ultra has gone a long way to repair their damaged reputation. The first gen Ultras sucked hard. The new X3s are pretty decent, if you dont believe me, beleive jonnyguru instead:

As for customer service, OCZ is tough to beat.

Jonny does know what he's doing...but I think he could be a little biased. Doesn't he work for Ultra?

OCZ all the way. Or go with an XClio GreatPower...

He does some work for them. Which is why he hands off the Ultra units to Madmat to review - he doesn't review them himself so he won't accidentally bias the reviews. If you look at the top of the review, you'll see it's not JG reviewing it

As for Ultra PSU's meaning crap, that's just not the case. The original X-Connect really was junk, but that model's no longer around. The rest of them were entirely Wintech built until they started doing business with Andyson. Wintech is about the same quality as lower powered XClio, Andyson is about Seasonic quality.

The Seventeam unit is another one off unit like the original non-PFC X-Connect was, but they learned their lesson there and went with a top tier OEM this time.

All this being said, I'd probably go for the 800W X-Pro or X-Finity... those are Andyson, and keep the fan going a little while after power off:

Considering the two choices I don't feel completely comfortable recommending either unit without knowing the complete specs of the proposed system and the environmental conditions. Neither power supply is ideal and has meaningful deficiencies compared to other units in this price range. What are the proposed system specs? Is there anything unique about the system? Do you use a power conditioner (UPS)? Will the system be in a hot or cool environment? Will this system be running 24/7 or consistently running at full load?

Correction: The ORIGINAL X-Connect wasn't very bad. As soon as the word spread a bit about the super cheap, pretty decent modular 500w X-Connect...Ultra got another company to make them. Those were crap. I found that out first hand. Search for my previous posts (my first few posts were about the PSU getting ready to die, and me denying it...). It killed my Athlon XP-M 2500+ That thing would do 2.6 GHz at 1.75v! STABLE! Ran a bit warm...but it was an awesome chip

how many amps do both PSUs have on their +12V rails? Let that also be a factor when deciding.
