P35-DS3R & E6420 - hitting 400 FSB barrier
E6420 Core 2 Duo, revision B2 w/ Stock Fan Gigabyte P35-DS3R rev 1.0 2x1gb Crucial Ballistix DDR2 low latency 4-4-4-12 500w Ultra PSU 80mm and 120mm case fans Okay...so with everything on auto, I can up my FSB to about 380-390 no problem. That includes the standard RAM multiplier or 3.0 on 5-5-5-18 timings. As soon as I hit 400 FSB, boom. My temperatures are still mid to high 30 C on the CPU, but I get memory dumps and BSOD. I upped the CPU voltages to 1.4v and relaxed the RAM frequencies and 400 FSB got to loading windows before it blue screened. I've heard of people getting to 3.5gz with a E6420. But if I can get to 3 ghz with all stock voltages, is it worth it to up everything just to get .5ghz? Also, if I wanted to, what are my next steps? Anyone with suggestions? |

Drop your multi and test whether its an fsb/ram problem or cpu problem.

Sorry, I wasn't clear but I did drop the RAM multiplier in the 2nd paragraph. So, at the moment I appear stable at 410 mhz, 1.440 voltage at idle (per CPUZ) & memory is at 1:1. I'll start upping in the Gigabyte Easytune until I crash.
What is the barrier to voltage? Temperature only or are you worried about just high levels? |

I have a fanless MSI 8600gt. Actually, I don't think easytune was that bad. It makes finding the limit A LOT faster because it doesn't require so many reboots and it only locked up once and then I did an "end task".
Anyways, I got to about a 425 FSB and was hitting 46 C on load. That's a 60% overclock. I think my voltage got up to just over 1.5. But, after doing some benchmarking I decided to go down to about 1.4v and a 385 FSB. I can tighten my RAM to 4-4-4-12 and a 468mhz frequency. I thought about getting an AF7 but this is a living room computer in the summer, so heat generation and noise are more of an issue. Vista, apps and games run plenty fast where its at now. |
