runlinux: The slot does support SDHC cards.

Additional Comment:

If anybody needs some serious mobility and doesn't mind 3rd party batteries, 10400mAh packs have started to show up on eBay (price seems pretty good as well, <$100). Should allow you to get away from the wall outlet for a good 6-7 hours.
10,400?!?! Did you write that correctly? lol

I am very interested in the ASUS. I am looking for a very portable laptop that would be used for email, web browsing, documents and as a portable movie player (maybe some other things). I really want something that will allow me to browse the net (wirelessly) while on my couch in the living room instead of having to go into my home office.

Can anyone tell me what the main differences are between the 2G and 4G, both non-Surf and Surf versions?

How hard is it to get used to the small screen? Is it difficult to read (like at EOCF?)

Urmm...Im not to sure about the 2G and 4G thing but im sure google will tell you.

Im going buy my experience of my mates that ive used quite offten. Then keyboard is quite hard to get used to because a few of the buttons arent as far along and there is no right shift key.

The screen for cluttered websites isnt that good but it did surprise me, i thought it was going to be like the net on my PSP. But i could also sugest the Dell M1330, Its alot more expensive but it is protable and then you could game on it a bit more.

And also with the movie thing, it doesnt have a DVD drive so you would have to have a flash drive big enough for a few films.

Ok.. I found this on ASUS's website:

- The "G" in the 2G and 4G stands for (DUH!!!) the HDD size.
- Looks like the only diffences between the Surf and non-Surf are the Surf has a shorter battery life and does not come with a camera (and is ~$50.00 cheaper).

They also have an 8G version listed in the Specification comparison, but I don't see anything about the 9" screen version.

[EDIT: Tell me what you find stange about this picture (this is for the 8G version at Amazon.com)]:

the black surfs have upgradeable ram - my black 4g surf (the one w/o the webcam) allowed me to install 2gb (w00t, no pagefile or swap needed)

propaintball: No typo, an 8-cell 77Whr battery for the tiny EEE PC. This thing will probably double the weight of the EEE (stock battery is 300g and EEE + battery is about 350g, so battery is most of the weight; this has twice the cells of the stock battery, so probably about twice the weight, i.e. 600g). Also sticks out of the bottom of the EEE probably a good one inch or so.

I think ASUS has had production issues with the 8G, so they're hard to find and sold for a markup. Free market economy at its finest. I'd recommend the 4G Surf or 4G. Both have more than enough space on the SSD for XP if you want to install that. If you need more space for pics, videos, etc. just pick up an SDHC card or flash drive. I never understood the allure of the 8G version, I'd rather pay $70 for 16GB of storage than an extra $100+ for 4GB of SSD. AFAIK only difference between the 4G Surf and 4G are battery life and webcam. I think the 4G may also come with a few accessories the Surf doesn't, such as a slipcase.

They keyboard definitely takes some getting used to, but once you do it isn't too bad. Screen is surprisingly usable, on paper it sounds unbearably small, but once you start using it I'm pretty sure you won't mind.

the 8g has the expresscard ssd while the others are built into the motherboard. you could though remove the wireless card from the expresscard slot and add in a bigger ssd drive while most people just add a nice fat SDHC card (or me, my 120gb usb hd).

well, that is assuming you dont want wireless...

acutally, the 8g has 2 expresscard slots (4 and 2g models have one - the wifi card) one for the ssd and one for the wireless card.

Lack of disk space is what has put me off buying it, They put a My Videos and a My Music folder yet is only has a 4GB drive making those folders pretty pointless as you wont be able to store more than about 3 movies or a few hundred songs.

Use a 16GB SDHC card (it's only 16GB, but that is more than just having 4GB).

They're pretty neat little systems, as long as you can live with the screen and keyboard I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it.

I have the Eee 8G and got rid of Linux and put XP Pro on it. I made an nlite XP install to cut the size down, but I love it. With the ability to clock it up to the full 900mhz and force resolutions (800x600 looks fantastic) I am loving the little thing. I hook it up to a monitor in my office then in my bedroom I just watch movies on it in my bed. I have 8G SSD, 4gb MircoSD, and a 320gb 2.5" external hdd and all of this works fantastic. I just got a logitech nano mouse and everything is great. I love the thing to death. It even plays games.

It runs windows XP like a champ. i am amazed at how well it runs on this thing. I also installed XP on my girlfriends 4G and it runs great too. even with just 512mb of ram although I have 1gb of ram sitting here waiting for me to install it in hers.

I got a good deal on the 8G so I picked it up. I don't even mind the 7" screen. I really do like the machine way more than my dell laptop. It's SO easy to just pick up and go anywhere. I don't even notice it in my backpack. My gf shoves hers in her backpack with all her college books and doesn't even notice it.

Super convenient. And now that the 10" or whatever are out, if someone is looking for a laptop or something super portable anyway, it's a fantastic way to go. Even the sound is really good.

the keyboard takes getting used to since it's tiny, but even that it's horrible.

Get one.
