$800 Budget

Hey fellas, I'm in the market for a new PC and unlike alot of the posts I've read I REALLY need an upgrade from my current computer.

Current Rig:
AMD XP 1700+
NF7 Original!
1 GIG DDR 266
250 Gig WD
Nvidia 7600 GS

As you can see I really need an upgrade. I do some average gaming on occasion but I really do alot of multimedia type stuff so quad core is probably more of what I need. I just need a good quad core rig suggestions for around $800 for me to look at. Thanks alot.

Start with one of these,
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...946&CatId=1599

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...025&CatId=1599

The first is a much better deal, but the difference between the CPUs is small. Then go with,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130334

One of these, size/price depending
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140

Either of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820313011
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146567

And this
http://www.buy.com/prod/corsair-vx-5...205852646.html

Puts you around 850$ the cheap route. Of course to save more you could get one of these combos from Tiger,
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...833&CatId=1599
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...908&CatId=1599

If your going to get the Q6600 by itself, get it from tiger because they only have G0 stepping ones.

To save somemore you could get a 90$ gigabyte P35 mobo.

This is a great system with a great price. I've purchased refurbished from Dell all the time. They have the same warranty as new and you can't tell the difference between refurbs and new.

Are there any real reasons for paying the extra money for the 780i over the 680i or the P35 for that matter?

A P35 chipset will allow DDR2 and DDR3 memory. A P35 will allow you to use a the older Core 2 Duo and the newer 45nm processors.

....by the way, beggars can't be choosers.

When I read the first line of Ceciltmeadej's reply, I 'bout cracked up! I thought, "This guy's asking for an $800 build and the first part recommended is $500!" I really thought you were going to outline a $10K system just for giggles, but it really does make sense. That's a strong build! We haven't looked at bundled deals before. That's a 60-70$$$ savings! COOL!! Thanks a bunch!

Good luck with your build BSD! ~Dad

Dell FTL, no OCing.

780i allows tri SLI, and support for 45nm CPUs, while afaik 680i does not support 45nm(maybe with a bios update?),

P35 is great, basically the best "budget" boards you can get, though they OC like mad. Only downside is no SLI, but they do have Xfire(and XfireX too). If you get a P35 with 2 Pcie I say swap the 9600GT for the 3870, this one is the best deal imo,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125086

Yeah, Tigerdirect usually has some great combo deals. That 500$ one is more for high end, but figured Id list it in case he could through in the extra cash for it.

If hes not overclocking, why get the hsf.
Gigabyte and Asus boards are basically the same, except the Gigabyte boards use S.S.C.s and have better efficiency, for less Vdroop(see sig ).

I just finished reading some reviews of the Wolfdale processor. Do you guys think it'll be more beneficial to go with a newer Wolfdale as in most of the reviews and benchmarks its **** near on par with everything the q6600 does.

Well quads are good for encoding and cpu extensive stuff. Are you doing any cpu extensive stuff like video encoding, or graphics rendering? Wofldale will get you few extra FPS for gaming and more energy efficient > lower electrical bill.
OCing G0 quad will use more power than wolfdale by far.
Here is comparision. Consider qx6850 similar to overclocked 6600 at 3 ghz.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/02/...ids/page8.html

IMO you don't need a new hard drive unless it is full and HDDs can be bought and added anytime in the future. Also check out corsair value series VX psu which are tad cheaper which Celtic linked. Also IMO since you are budget user look at AMD 780G motherboards and cpus. They are much cheaper but don't get the best perforamnce but still twice the improvement over AMD xp 1700.

Thanks for the link!

I was mainly going to use the thermalright for computer longevity...
