Overclocking Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe / AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+
I'm new to overclocking. I just bought a new system and wanted to overclock just a little and was wondering if somebody who had a similar system could tell me safe OC BIOS settings to save me lots of vigorous tests and stress. Here is my system: -Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe Socket AM2 nVidia nForce 590 -AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ (125W) Dual-Core Socket AM2, 3.2GHz, 1MB x2 L2 Cache, 2000MHz HT, 90nm -OCZ (OCZ2P800R22GK) DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz Platinum XTC Revision 2 2GB (2x1024MB) -XFX GeForce 8500GT Chipset (500Mhz) 512MB DDR2 (667Mhz) Dual Display DVI/VGA PCI-Express Graphics Card -Zalman CNPS9500 AM2 Heatsink Support FAN I've already set the memory timings to 4-4-4-15 but I'm afraid to touch anything else. I want to make sure everything is running at it's optimal level though without going too crazy or running too hot. Any help would be appreciated. On a side note: I'm doing a disk defrag (windows xp home 32) and it's taking over 5 hours... when I used to do it on my old system (same os) it would definitely not take this long... does this mean I have a BIOS setting incorrect? I'm using a Western Digital (WD3200AAKS) Caviar 320GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB Buffer. In my old computer I had only a 120GB IDE but it's still occupying the same space so I thought it should take the same amount of time to defrag... any thoughts? Sorry for being computer dumb... |

There are some nice stickies to read. They offer advice that even OC novices can understand. If anything is confusing, feel free to ask.
As far as the defrag time comparison, how much stuff is on each drive? If your 320 GB HD is only half full, it would reperesent more info that your old drive could even store, and would indeed take longer to defrag. |

Yes, I read most of the stickies, but still found it sort of confusing, plus I was hoping to pass on doing those long tests if someone else had a similar MB/CPU combo that worked well...
The 320 GB was still 93% free, and had approx. the same amount of data as my old 120 GB. That is why i raise suspicion... the only difference is it's SATA, and possibly i don't have something set right in the BIOS? Or the drive is not working properly, or something on my MB? I'm running it into XP safe mode, it's the windows defrag... |

me other half has that board, just not the delux version. i will take a gues that the bios are pretty much the same. i have found that ther are not that many option for OCing, i cant find that multi and voltage selection sucks on both Vcore and Vdimm so there for doenst over clock too well. leave the ram timing as they are for a mo turn the Voltage up fpr both core and DIMM and then start truning the HT bus up bit by bit until it becomes unstable, then clock it back a bit and hey presto.
as for the defrag, its a larger HDD so it will take more time, the defrag doesnt just do the amount of space that, it has to do the whole drive. fragmentation is when parts of file get moved to another part of the hard drive instead beign stored linear on the volume. defraging moves the parts of the files back together so they are no longer fragmented Example: u store some files on ur HDD, then you open make some changes and save them, this can cause samll amount of fragmention. such as one part of the file being stored at location 1 and another at location 320. so now the software has to scan the whole volume to find all the parts of that one file, now image that for every file you have on ur HDD |
