IIRC you will have to jailbreak it again if it doesn't brick. I thought that once you jailbreaked you had to keep up on the jailbreak updates to make sure that you can get it activated again.

IMO I wouldn't upgrade until the summer when the 2.0 update will be coming out. It is not worth the possible brick (mine bricked with the 1.1.4 update and I didn't even jailbreak my phone) for just the 1.1.4 updates.

So can the ipod/iphone be restored after it's bricked? Or does it have to be repaired by apple.

If it is bricked then you have to have it replaced by apple. Nothing you can do since it just sits there with the default unactivated world screen.

And I dont think insurance covers messing with the software either.. generally the phones are trash from that point on, unless someone can unbrick it.

Exactly. I love the giant apple-like fancy glass sign at the iphone counter stating just that.

I do believe there are some 'bricks' that can be fixed but I wouldn't risk it.

You can always try iBrickr or Ziphone to unbrick an iPhone, but there are no guarentees.

So.... Just don't update you're ipod.... ever? Or snoop around and wait until some other idiot bricks his ipod and you know not to update that one.

Can you Un-Jailbreak an ipod so you can update and then try jailbreaking it from there?

There are ways around this. My friend is an apple genius (think geek squad, but an Apple employee) and he fixes bricked phones all the time. As long as the display works, and shows something, you will be able to recover the phone and get it working again.

Do a search for "DFU" mode. This mode will allow you to restore the phone no matter what state you get it stuck in. There are very few and rare occasions when the phone DOES need to be replaced, but most of the time you CAN restore it.

As to your question, Yes, you will have to re-jailbreak your phone if you update. Be careful with restoring it from a back up though, sometimes your backups get corrupted by the jailbreak process.

I suggest Ziphone, it's the easiest Jailbreaking app out there for both OSX and Windows. One click jailbreaking/unlocking.

And I would suggest updating to 1.1.4. It adds quite a few features over 1.1.2 that make it worth all the while of getting your phone up and running on the new firmware.

ya DFU mode puts it in like disk mode or something like that, which will let you write the os back onto the ipod. i did do some ipod editing like a year ago and bricked my ipod with a wrong string edit. theres a guide on ipodwizard some were wich shows hou to restore it

Okie I haven't bothered to read the thread and let me make somethings very clear,

Anything, I mean anything that can possibly go wrong with the software can be fixed on the iphone without replacement, the only exception's are these -

1 - A phone unlocked by iphonesimfree software on firmwares 1.02 and below, and the phone having been restored after that, looses a unique token which once lost, cannot be used for repairing the seczone for a upgrade to 1.1.1 or anything over.

2- something getting ****ed up while upgrading/downgrading bootloader - dont attempt it if you dont know what ur doing!

Coming to the original question you just need to restore update to 1.1.4, download iLiberty -

http://george.insideiphone.com/index.php/iliberty/

install it
Check these options accordingly
Jailbreak - if you want to install additional software
Activate - if your not using itunes activated phone
unlock - if ur on tmobile or somehting
cedia payload - must for installing installer.app

and your all set. You SHOULD upgrade to 1.1.4 a lot of fixes and dont wait for 2.0, its gonna take time for people to release jailbreak updates, although 2.0beta has been cracked it will still take time for the final release version to be cracked.

Do not use ziphone it has a known issue although it is very very rare for a phone to undergo that but there is bug that can permanently disable the iphone,
if you have any questions let me know, I could possible help in anything, I have unlocked and soft repaired several iphones!

I used to fix basic ipod errors but never got around to fixing a touch/iphone. So DFU mode is like the disk mode? Or is it diagnostics.

DFU puts it in a restore mode. It *****es that it needs to be connected to a computer with iTunes so it can be restored from an official firmware release.
