External Hard Drive Media Players
do any of you have experience with the 3.5" enclosures that act as media players for the TV as well? I was thinking of purchasing one to watch my videos easily... but I don't really know if there are established brands or models out there, anything to watch out for. My local store is selling a Mediasonic HM3-SU2TV but it only displays a maximum resolution of 720p. Is that bad? Throw me anything. Thanks! |

I used to own one of the MediaGate models. It was OK.
Usually they play back almost everything you throw at them. Unfortunatly, the worst thing about any of these media players, is the user interface. A lot of them can be buggy and organizing files can be tedious. Are you the only person who will use it? If so, that may be OK. If you live with someone else who may use it, like a wife or girlfriend, it may be annoying for them to try to use it. I am always thinking of "will my wife be able to use it to?" Really, if you want the best solution, I would recommend you think about purchasing an Apple TV. I've had mine for a while and I love it. |

its not hard drive based [unless you add a USB one] but the Neuros OSD seems pretty decent. The Galaxy Tvisto does 1080i.
Apple TV has to be hacked to playback xvid/divx if you only buy/rent stuff from the iTunes store you are OK though. |

The Apple TV does not have to be hacked at all.
I use Handbrake to rip and encode files. It supports many different file types and video qualities. It allows you to store all your files externally if you want, while they're sinked to Itunes, you can stream them to the device. All I'm saying is that it's very easy to use and IMO a very good investment. Last edited by jcschlic : 06-04-2008 at 07:12 AM. Reason: More Info added. |
