AMD gets physics from Havok

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/AMD...sics,5646.html

The 4000 series cards do have physics, from Havok.

Quote:
In an announcement that we have to admit caught us a bit on the wrong foot, we learned today that this physics processing capability will come from Havok. AMD’s Godfrey Cheng, director of product marketing in the company’s platform and gaming technologies division, stressed today’s news does not include a product announcement, but simply points out that there is relationship being formed between AMD and Havok and the two companies are working together to "optimize" physics processing on AMD CPUs and AMD (ATI) GPUs.

Doesn't intel own Havok now? Interesting...

I wouldn't think intel would do such a thing.

I think it's probably more a "stick a thorn in nVidia's side" move than anything.

Both AMD and Intel knew that they would have to do something to combat nVidia's purchase of Ageia, so I would assume this would be a more logical solution for them.

Intel is so far out in releasing their own discreet graphics chip, but they can put the hurt on nVidia much quicker by working with AMD.

This is one the first of many moves Intel are going to make in the next 6 months to lay massive blows to nVidia. Good on AMD and Intel.

I really like what I see in the PC world with what looks like a MAJOR reality check in the works for Nvidia. They have been overpriced and greedy for far too long. This will serve them right and I can only hope this makes some major cuts into their business.

AMD issued a Press Release. Does seem odd. Why does intel see nVidia as a direct threat?

nVidia and intel both produce graphics, and mobile device chips. Also nVidia has ****ed off intel with specific comments and the whole SLi issue. This may just be a kick in the nuts to show them who's boss.

EDIT: Another reason for the 4870X2

I guess. intel doesn't compete in the discrete market, though. They're a corporation and their board can lose their jobs if they take action that is going to damage the company.

I think that this is a good move to ensure that intel's asset, havok will remain viable, I highly doubt that its damaging at all.
