iPhone 3G Bluetooth Not Working

Hey guys,

I'm not really a seasoned veteran with my iPhone yet (only since july 12th), but I am pretty convinced that the Bluetooth is not functioning correctly in my phone. When I go into the settings and enable Bluetooth, no devices get listed, and no one can see my phone even though the phone says its discoverable. I tried this with multiple laptops and other various Bluetooth capable devices (other phones, headsets etc.) and the rest of my friends have no problems connecting their phones with any of the devices. Are there any ideas? I tried Apple's website for troubleshooting but to no avail.

Thanks guys!

Actually, the iPhones bluetooth will only work with bluetooth are headset phone calls and even that does not have A2DP support. You cannot transfer anything via bluetooth to or from the iPhone or tether it like a modem.

The iPhone's bluetooth can only be used for pairing hands-free headsets. Nothing else.

I've seen it work with a bunch of different ones so I doubt it has to be "iPhone approved".

You might want to check out an app called air sharing. Lets you share via wireless. It is a regular app in the app store and is still free I think. No bluetooth replacement but it lets you easily transfer files back and forth.

Is there a way to replace the actually bluetooth module? I'll take this phone apart its cool, or is it built onto the board? and BTW -- The Air Sharing app is 6.99 now

I believe it is just a software limitation, I haven't looked into it because I don't need bluetooth, but maybe jailbreaking allows you to access more of the bluetooth capabilities. Some of the tethering apps look like they use bluetooth.

Hmm, maybe I'll have to look into that, cause this kinda sucks not having bluetooth that's compatable with everything else. Haha just another mac thats not compatable with anything

jailbreaking does nothing to the bluetooth.. I think you'd need to write new drivers to the iphone to get it to do anything other than headsets

Ouch, that really does suck.

That's just another reason to add to the list of why I chose a HTC Touch Diamond over it.

Even thought the bluetooth on the iphone doesn't do much, but it still should be discoverable with any other device. If its not even being able to be discovered something might be wrong with the phone's bluetooth modem.

Hmm, you do raise an interesting point, the only thing i can see my phone with is a mac, but your right it should be at least seen by other devices. What do you think I can do?

I was able to see my phone via my old flip phones bluetooth, but when I tried to send and receive files, that's when things went bad...

That's because Apple only wrote two out of the twenty-something bluetooth profiles for the iPhone... All that's needed is the missing profiles. SSHing to the iPhone will provide a much faster transfer rate than a bluetooth connection, but you have to have a jailbroken iPhone
