Yes. As long as the computer you're putting it into runs it at speeds at/under its rated speeds, you'll have no problems at all. The motherboard sets the actual speed that the RAM runs, not the RAM chips. The rated speed on the RAM is just what its maximum factory tests speeds are.

Having half a gig already means that she has the SSD version with Linpus, which doesn't benefit greatly from 1gb. It's not worth the effort and warranty voiding.
