OCZ Throttle eSATA 8GB Flash Drive Review @ EOC!

EXTREME Overclocking has just posted a review on the OCZ Throttle eSATA 8GB Flash Drive.
Flash drives have completely saturated the portable storage market. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and price ranges. OCZ has something different in mind, they are offering a flash drive in a different interface; a much faster interface than the traditional USB 2.0. The OCZ Throttle flash drive utilizes the eSATA interface, a feature found in most modern high-end desktop computers. eSATA allows for transferring large amounts data much faster than a traditional USB flash drive.

good review, but i dont see USB2.0 to be too slow when transferring a files less than 4gb. is eSata really needed?

but maybe on the 16gb version....

In response to speed - I've noticed that performance can really vary not only from one manufacturer to the next, but also for each capacity. I almost bought a 16GB (or maybe 32GB?) flash drive (don't remember manufacturer, it was not OCZ though) but once I started reading people's comments they were complaining how slow the write speed was. So I decided against the purchase. Instead I got a WD MyPassport Elite 400GB.

Sure it is a little bigger, but it's plenty of space for my portable needs and the performance is great. The only irritating thing is on about half the machines I hooked it up to, a single USB connection didn't provide enough power. So I had to order a "Y" USB cable from WD (Cost $16 to boot!) and that solved my issues. They should of just packaged the drive with the Y cable to avoid the hassle. I still use my flash drives for small transfers, but anything big or data I want to keep long-term I put on the HD.

Yeah... my Memorex UltraTD 160Gb comes with two USB plugs, but one is a standard 5V plug, so if you ever lose your power USB wire, you can always buy one of those cheap 5V power supplies with the right round hole and voila

I came up with an idea using eSATA flash drives exactly a month ago using OCZ's.

Both of those go together.

Can't wait for eSATA to be as common on computers as USB I could literally carry an entire OS with all my software on a 16 or 32GB one of these and with the extra speed from eSATA as opposed to USB this could get real interesting..

Actually, USB is fairly fast. Speed gain by an eSata would probably be minimal... for an OS, that is.

Cause I carry my Mac OS X install on my external 2.5" drive and it loads significantly faster than my friend's bloated iMac ^^

Well everyone should wait for USB 3.0, it's meant to be faster than the data transfer rate of DVI

Why wait? eSata is out right here right now, and it will take some time to see USB 3.0-ready parts on the market.

Nice review, kwik. OCZ is really maximizing the extent of their memory experience. Looks like a great product.

I have a combo esata/usb port on my laptop (asus m50 series) and this would be an awesome adition. I could throw Linux or osx86 on there and boot from it .

I wonder if you would be able to use it for ReadyBoost?

Ntfs?

Nice review, just wanted to ask if you tried using NTFS over the pre-formatted FAT32. My cruser got way faster going to NTFS.
