increased ram..slow laptop

my laptop has slowed down since i have removed one of the stock rams (512*2) and installed a 2gb ram in one slot, taking up the memory to 2.5gb.what do you suggest? do i remove the remaining 512 and fit in one more 2gb.
i wonder if my laptop (acer 4520) supports 4gb ram?
Moreover my ram are in single channel mode (should not they be dual)
and show dram frequency of 160 sometimes and 320 some other times.

please help i dont want to ruin my only machine.
thanks in advance.
my cpu-z validation reports are pasted below.

Don't ask why unless you want to join them.
I cannot see your specs at work, but it its a relatively new lappy, it should be running in dual. I would get another 2GB to match...

Not with one 2 gig stick and one 512 stick. They need to be equal.

You can drop that attitude @sshole. I didn't do anything to provoke that kind of response.

There was no troll involved. Don't know where you got that from. As for the other, I'll take the infraction if I get one, just for the personal satisfaction of calling it as I see it.

So to clarify, loose the 512 stick, move the 2gb stick into the first slot, and it should run correctly.

That or what CaligulaPwns was saying is buy another 2gb stick and replace the 512 with that one so it's 4gb dual channel ram, meaning your using two slot occupied with the same ram.

If you put 2x2gb of memory in you need to be running a 64bit OS to utilize all 4gb of it.

sir could you please tell me that does this laptop acer aspire 4520 support 4 gb ram in any case.i.e if i install a 64 bit os too.

else, i think i will have to change my rams to (1gb*2) configuration after selling this 2gb i have bought.

It's a laptop, and that's SpeedStep at work conserving the battery. When the CPU is loaded heavily it will (or not) go to full speed depending on the power settings.

That laptop will not really benefit from 4GB memory. 2x 1GB would be the best choice.
