Complete Nub - Over Clocking This?
Second of all, Argh i know you guys probably get a hell of a lot of these and to just read tutorials and stuff, But I have a mental disability, And it's easier for me too understand stuff when people talk to me over a forum or something rather than reading everything.Anyway, I have gathered some information about my system and was wondering if you could answer some of my questions, This is my PC: Code:
CPU: Intel QUAD Q9450 2.66MHz RAM: 4GB DDR2 800MHz Memory Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3 Socket LGA 775 (OC)/1333/1066/800 MHz FSB. CASE: Dunno, Some ordinary one but has a pretty big side fan and i think smaller ones on the back, seems pretty good. PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 750WATT, Thermaltake Yellow Reactive IDE Cable? lol wtfs that GPU: GF 9800GX2 PCI-E 1GB 2X256 Bit DDR3 600/2000MHz. I'm thinking 3.6ghz or w.e.? Maybe 3.2 if there isn't much difference between the 2 in FPS wise? Also, If i went to around 3.2 will i see what type of improvement in games do you reckon from the stock 2.66? And also, Would i be able to over clock the GPU at the same time and get better performance? or should i just leave that stock ? Thank you very much for your time guys and ladies, I thank you in advance. P.S. Any programs you want me to install and report back with more info or something to help you out ? |

Ok what i can see is:a built in fan on the motherboard, looks pretty freakin big too, then i have one on the back of my PC which is in plastic and has like a green and red led in it for some reason with another spot for another one above it, and then i got another one almost exactly the same on the side of my case.
theres also air coming from my gpu which must mean theres a fan in there... I cant see anything else really.... all i know is it "SEEMS" nice n cold inside of the case.. :E Oh, btw my case is a "Zonix" I'll try find the exact one now for you. someone can help me since treys offline ? I would just like to talk about it thanks fellas. |

If you can maybe just take a picture of the mobo and then post it on here or attach it from another image-sharing site, then we could probably identify it.

If it's something like this, which it most likely is, then you'll need to get something a little better before you attempt to do much of an overclock.

Crap i think it is something like that..... Heres some pics i took from my Omnia, Sorry pics might not be the best....
Any advice on what i should get and how much? Keep in mind I wanted to do this as it was a much MUCH cheaper thing to do than go out and buy another CPU..... I'd like to get quite a decent performance boost, So maybe 3.6 would be absalutely PERFECT!! Thanks everyone, for your time in helping me, I'm trying my hardest to give you the info you need. Note yeah yeah i know i need to get in there and clean.... lolll |

ya, that stock fan looks big till you see something like this:
http://www.techpowerup.com/img/09-01-23/dfi201092.jpg http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/proli...pu-cooler.html So before you start to OC, thats your first step, find a good cooler. Whats your budget? Will you be installing it yourself? _________________ Here is a good cooler thats a bit cheaper: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...TEK-_-35233029 |

Umm, I was thinking of spending nothing, But If i must and it's cheaper than upgrading... Maybe around 200? I'm going out of state soon So i don't have much too really play with.
The cheaper the better. What should i do? I have no idea about fans other than case fans lolll Umm I'd probably get my local pc dude too install since he's a good friend. Thats a pretty good fan, How much is that in AU dollars? or is that AU? Is that All I'd need? How far could i over clock the CPU with that thing?? |

The Xig S1283 is about au$50
Xigmatek S1283 CPU Cooler (au$52) your friend should be able to order that for you. You could also get a Sunbeam CCF 120mm. Those are the two best air coolers from the price/performance point of view. You need about 6" between the MOBO and the side fan in your case to use one of these coolers, so you should measure. The CCF is a bit smaller than the XIG, so if you have just under 6", but more than 5.5", then go with the Sunbeam. If you can't fit one of the 120mm coolers, use the 92mm version of the Xig, the SD964. You will have to track that one down over there. You can usually do an overclock of 10% to 20% using the stock cooler, so you can at least give ti a try. Start slow and watch your temps. You probably don't want your RealTemp core temps to go much over 55C. You should install realtemp and post you idle temps, that would give you some idea of where your cooling is at right now. I would also stick another exhaust fan in the empty rear fan bay above your current rear exhaust. LMHmedchem Last edited by LMHmedchem : 07-09-2009 at 10:31 AM. |

Those temps seem high for stock, and with only 1.5% load. what are your ambient temps?

Go into RealTemp and click on the settings button at the bottom. Adjust the TJ Max on all four cores to 95C if that is not what the value is right now. I believe that 95C is the correct value for the q9450, someone say so if it isn't.
Ambient temp is just the room temp in centigrade. LMHmedchem |
